• Looking for interest in aluminum hood vents

Ok, here is a 3d model of what I have planned for my car.

http://www.digitalnothing.com/thomas/plan.html

This is a description of them:

All aluminum construction, most likely all 1/16th of an inch thick aluminum (plenty strong, and nice & lightweight). Will have to cut a hole for it into the hood obviously, some mistakes on cutting would be ok since the lip of this extractor will extend out about an inch (could go as little as 1/2", and as much as you want past an inch)

They are vents, when open, you will be able to see into the engine, when closed, they will be watertight. The watertight seal will likely come from clear silicon, that is a point of experiment once I get working on them. You will be able to open & close them from inside. It is a simple mechanical system, all that has to be done is run a cable to the interior. No motors, etc. I will describe the movement system in more detail if you contact me.

A drainage system consisting of a couple holes at the lowest point & some tubing that will get water to the ground (the routing of this tubing, etc, heavily depends on where you want the vents, what kind of car, etc.)

I have figured out a way to do this without the assistance of a body shop. It basically involves you making a plaster of paris mold of the area in which the vent will go. I will explain the best way I have figured out to do it if you show interest, but I will say now that no, the plaster of paris will not come in contact with the hood .

Gauging interest in something I haven't done yet? That's right.

So here is the deal with the first person that genuinely shows interest. It would definitely be best if you were in the orlando area or are willing to take a quick trip here.

First person to show interest gets labor free. Gotta pay for materials though, which completely depends on how big the vent(s) you want are, for the ones pictured above, I will be safe and say materials would be around 250 dollars, but that is just a guess from me looking at prices at a supplier I know. It may be more or less expensive.

The only reason I'm not doing this to my own hood right now is because I don't even have enough money to buy materials. Plus, an outside perspective and assistance is always good.

Post here, or aim me at str0bhen if you care to talk about it. Questions and comments are more than welcome.

Why not make the vents controlled by a small motor? That way, you could imply flip a open/close switch and voila

Thought about that & there are several problems

1. The motor would have to be manually controlled (if you left it on, you would probably burn it out)
2. The motor would have to reversable
3. The motor probably wouldn't keep the cable taught enough to keep the vents open
4. Electric motors aren't reliable :)
5. Its more expensive to use an electric motor
6. I would still have to run wires to the dash

The cable will be like one on a lawn mower. Kept taught by a spring, encased in a plastic sleeve so I don't have to use pulleys everywhere, etc.

Cable is simply simpler, cheaper, and more reliable.
