Anyone know how to go about an extensive interior customization for a 2000 Firebird? I get jealous when I see nifty gadgets in other cars.

Some of it ranges from pretty simple to pretty complex. Power window locks (to keep the passenger from opening/closing the window) would rock. I'd like to change out the dash and get something more sophisticated... maybe an LCD panel in the middle (where the CD/AC is) with readouts for mileage and what not... maybe even GPS? Perhaps an interface for an improved stereo system.

Where would you go about investigating that? Sort of a long-term hobby, small improvements here and there. Costs?

Eh?

The usual carbon fiber dash inserts. Voice activated stereo/computer/Internet/GPS/TV/DVD with pop out screen in center console.
Aluminum shifter, with extra buttons for nitrous.
Extra guages for nitrous. (A-pillar, center ac vent). Of course, it's illegal to have that stuff unless you actually HAVE N20...
Sparco racing seats. Hud.
Built in radar detector.

It'll cost ya a pretty penny, unless you're Bill gates or a close relative. For the GPS System, I think around $2000 for a good exclusively in-dash system, and an additional who-knows-how-much labor charge. http://www.wiremagic.com might be able to help with any custom installs you do, but I don't know since I just found that site as I was looking around for information on what you want :D

The Power Window locks... I guess they'd be nice if you had a kid in your passenger seat playing with your window... it shouldn't cost too much. Get a switch, mount in somewhere on the driver's side door, wire it around to the other door... there's probably a very inexpensive locking mechanism you can get to prevent the window from rolling down. (Sorry for the 'impromptu' flavor of this message, I just felt like replying - this interests me ;) )

The LCD readouts for the mileage/odomter... that would be an accomplishment. That is, if your current Bird doesn't have an electronic readout display by the gauges for the odometer. If it does, there's probably a way you can get a computer behind an LCD Screen [A custom one could be expensive] to read from the digital odometer and display it there. Mileage.. I don't know if it can be converted into an an electronic [digital] reading.. that would take A LOT of work. I have a lot of ideas in my head, but can't put them into words at the moment. However, if you accomplished that... WOW... that would be cool. It's sure going to take alot of adjustments and new additions to the car to make anything like this happen... I'm sure you know that.

Right now, I think you should start investigating little things that you want to go on the dash, such as LCD screens and a custom computer that can report readings and stuff onto that screen. You could design and put together the stereo interface probably the easiest, such as having switches and controls for each individual speaker and an equalizer setting and an adjustment for the base level and pitch for everything... not in a regular CD Player console persay, but maybe tiny little buttons and knobs you put together on your own.... ah that sounded better in my head

Sorry if I'm not much help.. wouldn't mind discussing ideas with ya though. I'm a 19 yr old with plenty of em... unfortunately though, I wouldn't be much help for actual application

Edit: After reading the reply that got posted before mine, I now feel like a complete idiot... looking at the VIRTUAL SUPER DISPLAY ( V.S.D. ) II.. I guess digital conversion of MPH/TACH *is* possible quite easily. I am a firm believer in not deleting original stuff, so I'll leave my embarassing post up for all to see

Edit #2: Check out the Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4... they all have climate controls on an LCD screen, digital readout... basically an onboard computer. Perhaps looking at one of those or investigating the electronics behind it could provide a starting point for adding that, or any other LCD application for that matter, into your vehicle. Theoretically, your Bird could be fitted with an automatic climate control, that would be sweet.

Well, I know it is not Exactly what you are looking for, but here are some pics of my custom interior, work still in progress.

Digital Gauges

I have more of the gauges in now (installed the Voltmeter, as well as blinkers and a SES light), but keep running out of money.

Custom Front Seats

I only have the front seats in now, I haven't decided if I am going to keep the back seats in or take them out and put something else back there.

B&M Quicksilver Automatic Shifter

I couldn't stand the stock T-handle shifter.

As far as putting in a Window lock, that would be easy, all you need is a switch/button, and find the wires that control the passenger switch.

Keep in mind though, that most of the stuff you suggested will cost a fortune.

Or, a Direct Fit panel kit - basically the entire dash panel [I'm assuming that Camaro fits Firebird as well, whic I think it does :D ) http://www.nordskogperformance.com/dp4003.html That looks nice, I think I'm going to buy that Green LED one... too bad it didn't come in blue... that would rock.

Edit: Nevermind. Last model is for a 1992. I'll have to scratch "easy way out" off on my list ;)

seven-segment displays are half-a$$ed.

Grab a display from a Toshiba Libretto and go wild!

But then again. I'm jaded because I know how to hook that stuff up. programming the software is what kills me most of the time.

But that's the way the cookie crumbles.

Hey Blue Jay! I've been thinking about the same place (Wet Okole) for my seats. I thought they only had black outer trim with an inner color choice? Or do they do up specials? And just how much did they cost ya? Very nice BTW...

Yeah, how'd ya hook up that B&M shifter? It says on their website that you need a controller for the electronic transmissions such as ours, where did you buy this and what's the price/part number? Very cool Blue Jay!
