• !Cracked Windshield mod....

I'm posting this as a warning to others in light of my recent news. Wouldnt you know that something goes wrong as soon as I save up enough money to fix my ground effects.
I was just finishing up washing and waxing my car yesterday, getting it all nice and shiny for the 4th of July, when I went ahead and popped my hood to replace one of my headlight bulbs. It was kinda strange, the hood was opening really slow and made a grinding type sound . I thought maybe something was in the hood supports, so I just helped lift it up a bit. Then I starting hearing this cracking sound and decided that was too much and put the hood back down to figure out what was wrong. I looked over and saw that my wipers were left up from when I washed my windows, but there was silver paint from my hood all over them. Dang nabit that sucks! I left my wipers up and the hood was grinding against them; it took off a decent chunk of paint unfortunately. Well, then I look by my hand at the drivers side wiper....Much to my dismay there was a huge spiderweb crack in my windshield now too right behind the wipers . Now I need to get a new windshield for my car, and this thing is gonna steadly grow from the bottom corner all the way across to the top corner, ARGH!!

Anyways, the moral of the story is: Always check to make sure your wipers are down before opening your hood. I completely forgot about them being up, but I never would have expected them to crack the windshield anyways. I just figured I'd warn other people that it can have dangerous consequences, this sucks...

BTW - my headlight ended up not being burnt out, it was just a loose wire from where the headlight wire was spliced for something. So the thing I originally popped the hood for in the first place was actually fine....

Yeah, I've started to open my hood once or twice with the wipers up. I always stopped as soon as I felt the resistance though.

Wow, you really must have pressed damn hard. I'm sure your wiper arms are bent too, you may have messed up the linkage too. You might want to check that before you turn them on. Also, touch up the spots where you rubbed the paint off of your hood, you don't want to let it rust.

Yes, windshields are quiet pricey. I'm sure that will run ya $200-$500. We just replaced the glass on one of our minivans. The glass was $221 plus labor.

Sorry to see that happened to ya man, hope the replacement goes well.

The design of the 4th gen windshield mount is very poor. The area where you have your crack is not supported all the way to the edge of the glass. ANY extra pressure near that corner of the windshield will result in extactly the same type of cracks you have (been there, done that). I can't tell you what it will cost to replace as I have full glass coverage so it didn't cost me a penny. Good luck.

call your insurance company and say and rock flew up from the highway and cracked it. i got a chip in my winshield from that and had it fixed for free. since yours is real bad, they should replace it under insurance.

There would be a chip from a rock, not just a crack.

Thats pretty dishonest dude.

Yeah, this is probably gonna be a pretty penny to fix. I'm not sure if I want to call my insurance or not yet. I have a $500 deductible for comprehensive stuff, but I dont know if it's separate for glass coverage. I was thinking about changing my deductible then telling them like a month down the road, but more than likely I'll keep things legit and get them to give me what they've covered (maybe it's everything ::crosses fingers:
I didnt push hard at all. No harder than I usually do when opening the hood, I just went a lot slower since it was making noise. I dont think the arms are broken, it doesnt really look like the wipers actually touched the glass. It looks more like the section that they are attached too shifted and just broke the glass cuz it flexed too much in that place. Oh well, I didnt have a good day with my car to say the least. My mom also put a chip on my door by slamming it into the car next to us at the store. My poor car, as soon as one thing gets fixed the next thing goes wrong....but what do you do.

It probably varies from company to company, but our insurance has a seperate lower deductable for stuff like glass. They told us that the rates won't go up due to claims from glass breakage.

Well, I called my insurance and they said this just goes under comprehensive stuff so I'll still have the $500 deductible (I hate my insurance company, but I hafta stay on it to get my parents rates, blah). I decided not to file the claim that way, and called around to a few glass places. I got quoted $260 from cherrydale glass, a place a lot of friends have been satisfied with in the past. They come out to your house and replace it, transfer stickers and stuff, and it's warrantied for workmanship. I guess that's not too bad; still a wad of cash, but not nearly what I thought it would be. Maybe I can still afford to do my gfx thank goodness.

Wow Dominic, that does suck. Nothing like having that happen less than a week after owning the car. I guess it is to know that other people have done this before too, makes me feel like I'm not a retard. I'm gonna schedule it to be fixed early next week I guess now. It's kinda funny watching the cracks grow though with each trip I take with the car. It's already grown like 6-8 inches, at least I have something to kinda laugh about every time I take a corner. "Here comes another two inches to the crack" lol. I think I'm gonna go do donuts the day before the dude comes just to see how much I can make it grow, do you think that'll be bad to anything else on the car??
