i bought a second one off ebay. only 20 bucks. its not hard at all to take off. if you try it though, protect the sensor underneath so that coolant does not leak onto it.
it looks clean, and a lot better. but not mirror finish. its probably because im just using normal sandpaper going from rough to extra fine, then using some aluminum polish and papertowels.. a little water every now and then.. :( tips?
I got a tip... rub like hell with some Mother's polish and a cotton cloth or towel til' your fingers feel like they are gonna fall off... should be starting to shine like a mirror by then... You could also try using a drill with a buffing pad from Home Depot instead of killing your hands/fingers.
yea i keep rubbing polish on it with soft paper towels, and it gets clean. then the more polish i put on, the more black crap keeps coming. its like unstoppable.!
yeah, ive been using a dremel, and the mothers polish. its going to just take a lot of time, which yes nikon, i have plenty. classes are easy right now :D

there are really only two things you need to do to get a mirror shine, first you get the metal as flat as you can with sandpaper. just go up in grit like you said. i prefer to go to 2000 like this:
230, 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1500, 2000
Then polish, and when you polish, put on a little, rub it in, then fold the towel to a clean spot. keep folding till its gone.
On that piece youre working, i believe i started on as high as 800 maybe. definitely dont need to start at 230.
i had to start at 230 for the top, cuz it had a sticker on it that was a pain to get off. i keep polishing and polishing but that black just stays there. but good advice, ill try just section at a time.
