  • Help Me Match My Car's Paint (color code confusion)

Well now, while getting price quotes for paint for 2 fenders and front nose, I'm confused as to what color it is. I thought that it looked pretty close to the original paint's condition, but according to the code in my glove box it is called Medium Teal Blue Poly (code 37), which is much darker than my car and doesn't seem to match. It's full code is WA-U146A, found in my glove box.

According to this site:, there was no such color for my model year, but they do have that paint code (37). :

Here's the PPG database, I have the actual book at my school, it has the paint code 37, but the name and color does not match. Although other paint codes match with their names for other colors, mine is the only one that does not.

Now I'm confused. Yes, it could be that my car's paint has slowly faded, but the shade on the page (which you probably cannot tell by the link) is very different and doesnt seem like the car was ever that color. Is it possible that that is a Firebird color? The only paints that seem close are the 2 different shades of Bright Aqua (both code 43, but different shades).

Also, if I do have faded paint, is there some other way that my paint can be matched?

This might help with some confusion about the paint codes and such. Maybe not.

Take your paint code and go to some paint supply stores and see if they have a computer color match machine, I guess that would be a good word for it, but anyways I'm not sure what would be a good panel for them to scan, maybe a door or gas lid but they will know (the scanner looks like a camera). Usually the computer plus your paint code will give them a good idea where to start mixing.

I just finished painting my hood and I had the paint color-matched to my roof and I will say it came out real close except for the metallic and pearl which is really noticeable other than in artificial light. Since I could not find my paint code on my car, they couldnt take variants from the factory color so the scanner took a color sample from my roofl and found the closest color in the database and then manipulates that to match.

Best of luck, any q's let me know.
