  • Finished the bodywork...pics

Ok, so back in April of 1999, I backed into a tree and caused a nasty dent in the rear quarterpanel. I didn't want to mess with it (Nor make an Insurance claim) until I learned basic bodywork and painting. I've been going to a shop to mess around with bodywork and trying the spraygun for the past 9 months. Anyhow, I finally got the nerve to try it on my own car. Took me 4 days to complete.

Shot it with my DeVilbiss Finishline II gun, and stunk the CRAP out of the neighborhood for a few hours:naughty:

Three light coats of paint, three light coats of clearcoat, wetsanded about 5 times, polished with rubbing compound then finished with Zaino.

How does the paint match up? I just had my passenger side quarter and bumper repaired and painted at a dealership (paid for by the other person's ins. company) and the color is a little off but you can only tell in the sun. My hatch is just a little lighter shade of purple.

Thanks for the compliments guys!:) I put alot of hard work into it, and it shows with about 3 nice-size blisters on my hands from sanding.
I still have to wetsand with 2000 grit a bit more, but I'm waiting a while. I've had my fill of bodywork for now.

I bought a quart of the paint from an Auto Bodyshop Dealer. I took small samples of the Cyclamen Metallic paint (purple), cut it down with paint thinner and mixed in a VERY tiny amount of White Urethane until I found the best match. That process alone took me about 3 days. I found a match, but forgot how I blended the paints to get it, so I had to start over again. :spank: I painted a piece of sheetmetal and matched it up with the rest of the car the next day until I found the best mixture. It doesn't match up 100%, but I'm happy for now.

Basically, (before I started going to the shop) I got alot of info Here.
I'd be happy to to a complete writeup, but most of what I type is listed right in that site. It takes patience and time. I didn't use Bondo. I used stuff called Rage Xtreme. It went on very well and dried with minimal pinholes and it sanded easier than Bondo. It's also lightweight.
The best advice I can give is "Rushing while doing bodywork shows!!".
Also, the longer you mix body filler after the hardener is applied, the more pinholes it forms. For best results, spread the filler in ~One Direction Only~, sand, then reapply in the other direction.

**Before you do anything though, go and get about 10 sheets of 2000 grit sandpaper. I only did my quarterpanel and I used about 9 sheets of it. It wears down somewhat fast, and keep a bucket of water or a running hose next to you as you're wetsanding. Keep applying clean water. The more water you use, the better the finished result will be.

Gotta go now. Heading out to do some shopping for some air tools:rock:
If you have anymore questions, please ask. I'd be happy to try and answer them for you when I get back.
