  • Anyone here good with Metal working?

Here's the deal: got a set of stainless door sills (won't name the company cuz I'm not too 100% satisfied with them). Anyway, the edges of them are jagged, a little crooked AND the top edge of the sills are WAVEY. This pissed me off the most, because it's not an easy fix. I emailed them asking for a better set and they said that all the sills are like and that they don't have time to make them perfect, so basically I'm on my own and to use sand paper. (Gee thanks. Like I knew I was spending $125 for crap workmanship.)

So I start sanding last night. AND BOY DO I SAND with heavy grit (I think it was 220 or so). I sanded these damn things at least an hour until my hand felt like it was going to fall off.

They look better, but still have imperfections. I cannot for the life of me get the waves out on the top edges of the sills. It looks some fool cut these with a jig saw.

    QUESTION IS:
Is there a machine or other form of sanding I can do to bevel the edges???

Do you have an angle grinder or maybe a Dremel? You could tape off a straight line, then grind it to a uniform edge. Or make a jig of some sort to make the grinding uniform, and pass the sill by the grinder.

I was thinking about using a dremel, but I think it'd be hard to get the edge even. I was also thinking about going to a local hardware store to see if they have a machine that can do it for me. Thanks for the suggestions. More welcome, as I'll mess with these some more later on.

That's all I got for now is the Dremel, and I've had to make do. Just attach the Dremel to a bench or something, so that the cutting wheel is just at the edge, and put a block of wood or something attached to the table top at the width you want the sill, and slide the sill along the edge. It's hard to explain... like making your own gheto table saw.

Either the cutting (said above) or the sanding bit for a rotary tool, I would suggest the cutting bit for a quicker job, however the sanding bit would come out alot better. Good luck dude.

This will probably sound stupid to most of you ... but take them to a gutter shop. They'll be able to cut a perfect line in one shot and smooth it on a hand brake. Like I said, sounds stupid, but they'll be able to do it.

If you ever watch overhaulin' Chip Foose reccomends having a gutter shop make side skirts for muscle cars, b/c they have the equipment to make any radius bends, and straight cuts also... could try it...

Yeah, those are the same exact ones that I got, cept' I got em' from Fasttoys. I'll bet someone makes them and distributes them to these places. It's taking me time to fix the damn things so that they are presentable at cruise nights/shows. Maybe I'll work on them some more today or take them to a shop. I'll keep ya updated on how things work out.
