Re: Berger question
yes you should sand it just like anything else. I would use car paint.

Re: Berger question
he has a point. I doubt it would cost an arm and leg to have it repainted by a pro. Thats the way I would go.

Re: Berger question
if you know what your doing, on just that panel, with the right rpepwork , sanding, buffing, u can actually make it look good with some spray paint.... i have seen a few.... but i would still reccomend geting it professionally done....

I bought the paint in a spraycan from a website that matches your paint code. Began by wetsanding the mirror with 1000 grit to rough-up the surface and remove the gouges. Sprayed a few light coats of paint, then a few light coats of clearcoat. Wetsanded the clearcoat (about two days later) with 2000 grit to get the "orange peel" off, buffed with a medium compound, then a swirl remover, then finished with a carnuba wax. It came out so good that no-one can tell it was ever damaged, and it matches the original paint.
It's alot of work, but it teaches you the fundamentals of basic bodywork...at a beginners level.sigpic

If you have no other black accents on your car, then I'd recommend flat black panel. If you have black mirrors, stripes, hood inserts, headlight housings (93-97), Ect. then I'd recommend a shiny black panel.sigpic

Re: Berger question
Ok, so here goes:
Sand down the original panel using 1,000 grit wet. Get between the c-a-m-a-r-o letters the best you can. Prime using a black primer & allow to dry for about 1/2 an hour. Paint with gloss black, about 3 to 4 light-to-meduim coats. Do not spray too heavy or you'll get runs. Allow to dry overnight.
Next day is for clearcoat:
Clearcoat the same way you painted.
Allow clearcoat to dry ~AT LEAST~ overnight or 10-24 hours in temp ranging from 60*-80*.
Next day is finishing day:
Wetsand with 2,000 grit to remove the orange peel effect. You WILL have it! Take your time. Sand, let dry and look for more orange peels, sand some more. Use plenty of water!!!!! You cannot go wrong there!
After wetsanding:
Buff with a meduim compound. After compound, buff using a swirl remover, then finally a carnuba wax or polishing wax. It's easier to apply the compund, swirl remover and wax with a buffer. By hand is okay, but you'll be running out of stamina after the compound is applied. Use different applicators/pads for each wax. Never the same one for two (or more) different types!!
Take pics along the way to show your results, and to brag
Good luck...sigpic
