are license plate covers illegal?

I've seen some cars around with lightly tinted license plate covers. I've heard somewhere that it's not the best idea to screw with your license plate, but since i have a black car, and i have to have a license plate on the front, anything to make it stand out less or make it look more classy helps...

how many people do you know that have been pulled over or ticketed for having a licence plate covor? i have them on my car... and so does my bro and dad...

i live in ohio and have never heard of somebody getting pulled over for it..
just dont get one that is to dark

I would call an auto parts store. If they are illegal they will nothave them in stock. If they are legal they will have them. Thats how I found out about blackouts in VA

that isnt true.

they are illegal in illinois, and u can find them at any parts store.

I have tinted covers on m car, i think they make all the difference. Just makes the plate that much less noticable

Well I just googled it and they are illegal. Here is the law number 803.550 in paticular 803.550 2 B =

(2) A registration plate is illegally altered for purposes of this section if the plate has been altered, modified, covered or obscured including, but not limited to the following:

(a) Any change of the color, configuration, numbers, letters or material of the plate.

(b) Any material or covering, other than a frame or plate holder, placed on, over or in front of the plate that alters the appearance of the plate.

Down here in Florida I have a clear plate cover. They will pull you over if you have the smoke colored ones.

I had a smoke one on my back plate here in Michigan for about a week and got pulled over for it. No ticket, but still..

Dang, i guess i can't get one, i don't want the cops to have any reason to pull me over.. Thanks for the research... i didn't think of looking up the laws

ohio use laser they usally pull you over ASAP becues it makes it harder for them to clock you...... lol
