  • Full car paint job....

    99 Camaro V6

My car has just way too many chips and scratches on it (not to mention a very big scratch made recently) and I want to get the whole thing painted. Same color (red, love red). I thought about getting a touchup pen from GM and doing it myself but the big scratch is, well, big.

What should I do before taking it somewhere? Would it be cheaper to do the sanding myself? Of course I will wash very well it before doing anything. What grit sandpaper should I use? How much am I looking to spend?

    Thanks.

      Good point.

Do you still like it would be best to sand it myself prior to?

Hell, there's quite a few people here from Ohio and I like to drive.

Any Ohioans out there know of any good shops in there areas? Maybe you have your own setup or a buddy? Worth a try.

you could but most professionals will not want to deal with your own work since its there name and possibly come back going on top of your possibly less than satisfactory prep work.

I have a buddy that owns a car lot and he has a guy that comes out every Thursday to do touch-ups on his cars. He said I can bring my car by and he'll touch it up for like $80. However, my bumper and the giant scratch are beyond a touch-up job. I wonder what this guy's potential is with painting? Maybe he can help with doing the whole car? Hmmm. Time to call my buddy.

How bad is the "big scratch" ? Is it down to the primer? You might be able to wetsand it out if not (or have your friend do it)

You should just pay someone to have your front bumper repainted. Mine is looking pretty bad too and that's what I'm going to do. The rest of the paint is almost flawless.

Its about 1/4" thick and about a 12" long. If the primer is white, then yes, it got to the primer.

Its been raining for like two days here and when my car is wet most of the scratch isn't very noticeable. Hopefully a good sign.

you can go cut rate on the paint job and it'll be decent. i got into a fender bender like 2 years ago and went to maaco for the el cheapo paint.
you get what you pay for. i have a few runs and they didnt let the hood dry long enuf b4 they put it back on so theres a big ol chip in the center from some road debris.
i'm obsessive about doing a job right so every time i wash my car i tell myself i wish i had the money to go get it redone properly. most people wouldn't even notice it tho. Just be sure if you go for a bargain you'll be prepared to accept the results.
