  • Firebird 5th Gen Front Ends.

I bought my 00 bird from a used car dealership and I was wondering what the difference is in the two front ends of the 5th gen cars. At first i thought the 98 99 and 00 models had the round fog/parking lights while the 01 and 02's had the slits down the side. But i noticed i was wrong on that one, then i figured maybe the round lights are only on the v6 models but after seeing a few pictures that has proven me wrong. Was that just a package that the dealership gave to people that chose between the two front ends? I was just interested kind if been on my mind cause i was wondering if i could take my round light front end and swap it with a slitted front end.

Re: Firebird 5th Gen Front Ends.

from 98-02 some of us call it a 5th generation due to the fact that gm put the LS1 in the transam and formulas rather and did away with the LT1's. So a lot of people call them 5th generation... and the did away with the "pointy snout" front end from 93-97. Technically there isnt a 5th gen but everyone talks like there was one.

Re: Firebird 5th Gen Front Ends.

you have your 1st gens (67-69)

          Then your 2nd gens (70-81)

And then you have your 3rd gens (82-92)

There is another generation, which is the 4th gen.
The 4th gen consists of 93-02, where the 93-97 is the early 4th gens and the 98-02 are considered to be late 4th gens.

Correct me if Im worng guys.

            v6- Side fogs with "circles"
Formulas - v6 style but has an LS1

If that was the case then we would have a lot more generations than 4. Like the 2nd gens when they went through engine and different front ends. Not to be mean but we are just trying to correct you.

Anyways here is a real brief picture view of the body differences of the 4th generation, if someone wants to be real technically they can add:

              1993-1997 Firebird

              1993-1997 Trans Am

              1998-2002 Firebird

              1998-2002 Trans Am

Like I said the above is just a quick brief picture explanation

Yeah I only touched on stuff I knew for sure, as you said isn't the Formula just the "firebird" look but performance of the T/A. Then we have the Firehawk option.....so yeah.

Same body style (minus little things like the front fascia), same basic construction, same generation. Like already said, if you were gonna take minor cosmetic changes and different engines as new generations then there would be about ... oh i dunno, maybe 12 or 15 generations. Damn 2nd gens changed ever other freakin year.

Yup, the 5th gen firebird will actually be a GTO. I find it funny that they wont call it a firebird but I guess they are trying to get away from the stigma that it has.

Re: Firebird 5th Gen Front Ends.

Never heard of the late 4th generation... i dont know thats what people around here call the new models the 5th generation, not really trying to argue just going by what i was grown up around. I really grew up around the third generation the 82-92 cause thats all my dad had was a whole friggin junkyard full. He would drive one till a part went and he would yank it of another bird and would ride it till the engine blew and move onto the next one, i dont think hes ever passed up a deal on a for sale sign sitting on a third gen bird out in someones front yard. Then i went and bought my car and we have just gotten so used to calling it a 5th generation rather than a fourth. I know the body styles are all the same but the front end and engine but for some reason to me they do look drastically different... iunno maybe its just the stock colors gm sold them in... heres also what made me start calling them 5th generations cause of this exert i ripped from wiki.

"As before, the Camaro kept the exposed headlights and the Firebird its pop-up units, with some minor changes. In 1998, the Firebird received a new front fascia (now with four pop-up headlights; the Camaro's front end was also switched, to two oval headlamps) and other modifications, the most significant of which was the Corvette small block V8 engine known as the LS1. These 1998 to 2002 models are sometimes referred to as "fifth generation" Firebirds. The final model year, 2002, offered a distinctive 35th anniversary edition that paid homage to the 1969 Trans Am. Like the Chevrolet Camaro, the Firebird and Trans Am were built in Sainte-Thérèse, Quebec. The plant closed down after producing the last cars."

His whole thread was based on why the front Fascias were different and why some v8's had the side fogs, without formulas your not answering his question at all.
