im looking to redo my door panels to a shade of red that better matches my interior..either some sort of overlay or reupholstering them..i was going to just get some sort of red fabric and lay it over the carpeted parts and then have the plastic door panels cover up the excess for a nice tight and exact looking fit..although this may work on the bottom part..the top part attaches to the rubber by the window and to the side of the door..so im not really sure how to go about that

i searched but didn't come up with much..is there a write up on this out there somewhere?

If I understood your post correctly sounds like you want to do this WITH the door panel still on? Not that it isn't possible but if you want to do a correct and good job.......yeah

Take it off. REMOVE the old carpet, brake cleaner may help with any adhesives on the back of it. Also carpet is not a bad look, but I think most of the time vinyl/leather knockoff looks better(think of your dash). Also to attach I would use some type of strong spray adhesive(3M makes a good product, can't think of name) or contact cement which is brushed/rolled on. But keep in mind once you lay it with contact cement you better have layed it correctly in the first try. I hope this helps some.
