  • tried my hand at a combo of different paints

ive used every one of these paints seperately and i decided to combine them all to one part. seeing how i have no job lately ive had a bunch of time on my hands to play with paints :D
so heres what i came up with. the "speed shape" was already painted with the white and retro glow (very easy to paint) and was looking kinda boring. especially seeing how i have a number of parts painted with this stuff.
i wetsanded the existing clearcoat and applied crystal fx (a self crystalyzing masking liquid, cool stuff) and allowed that to dry in the sun.
next step was to very lightly dust a coat of black. has to be pretty much dry sprayed so the material that isnt supposed to stick can be washed off.
after letting the black coat dry next step is to wash the black off. sound strange? it is... use a sponge and water to scrub the black. this leaves the crystal pattern.
next, blow all the water off and clean the surface for the next coat, which happened to be "oriental blue" candy mixed with an innercoat clear. this has to be done in at least 4 coats. try to do it in less and youll regret it and have to start all over. try not to streak it either...
last coat is straight clear. try not to run this one.
all in all theres 7 different layers of paint (primer, white, retro glow, crystal fx, black, blue candy, clear) and each one has to be done properly or you have to start all over. im proud of this one :excited:

these pics just dont do that blue candy justice. it looks much deeper in person. i tried to take a pic of this in the dark but my camera dosent have an adjustable exposure. the lighter blue sections glow in the dark... pretty wild lookin.
anybody want their valve covers painted? various other parts?
what you guys think? theres an endless number of possibilities with these products and im very open for ideas!

are you asking what the part is, or what the design is?
the part is called a speed shape. it gives the general shape of the average car to show the effects of paint at different angles of light. pretty much just for samples and they work better than a flat piece of substrate to show some of the paints that are coming out.
the effect is called crystal fx. pretty much pour it on (its a liquid) and it gives you basically a template for another color. yes, its strange, no i wouldnt paint my whole car like that. there are people who have (most of live on the west coast though...)
i just wanted to see if i could make a combination like that work. :)

I think they wanted to know what the piece you were painting on was. I didn't know what it was either. That's pretty cool. Nice job too.
