  • Water leaks on engine from cowl area

Mainly on the passenger side, thankfully not so much on the coil/ICM side. After a rain I'll have a puddle on the engine between my left valve cover and the intake.

It looks like with the split in the plastic cowl (by wipers) and beneath it the way sheet metal has a dip it was almost flawed by design to drain this way??

I have not yet put a hose to it and watched it... but I don't see anything out of the ordinary or damaged or missing, so I imagine someone else must have seen this and hopefully have a fix?

and yeah it is just water not antifreeze.

If I'm not mistaken, this is very common on fbodys... I know alot of people do have problems with water getting on the coils and they often get occasional misfires from it, that will usually go away once everything is dried up.

Yes, for some reason it is a design flaw and water does drain down through the cowl onto the coils and that general area underneath the hood. It will cause coils to foul out occasionally.

You can try to get some of that sealant foam, and spray it underneath the hood along the line of the cowl right around that area, and see if the problem persists, but you may have puddles of water collecting above the cowl area and cause your cowl to loose a little life longevity from water staying collected above it and sitting on it.

        hmmm

I'll have to take a closer look at it maybe something can be rigged up so it still drains but elsewhere?

Perhaps some kind of channel mounted under the cowl in the engine bay, just extending a little past the end of the cowl and rubber strip, something that can channel the water to the far left and right of the bay before dumping it? I dunno if it is even feasible to mount something like that without looking at it again... or what would even be best to use as a channel (plastic? aluminum?). Even if it were small and didn't interfere with anything it would still take precious space.

I dunno but I already have a pretty big list of stuff to do.

try the sealant foam, or get a new cowl... not sure what year you have, but i have an 01 that had the same prob. I had to replace the coils twice at $250 a pop. Luckily I was able to get a "new" cowl at a salvage place for $60...

if your paying 250 bucks per coil then you shouldn't be working on your car... mine were around 30 bucks.

That was when I had Chevy do it, back in my naive days!

I got my AC Delco coils for $15 each

What exactly was it about your cowl that caused it to be bad?

I have a 2000. Convertible. I suppose I should just be happy that when it stormed last week my interior was totally dry.

Chevy dealership prices are crazy. They wanted $195 labor to change my Diff. fluid. Fluid not included. It's only a few bolts for god's sake. My mechanic did it in 1/2 hour. :shakes head:
