    Re: Update on the damage

after some sanding and rubbing compound...

still have a lot of polishing and such to do..but i think it looks decent for a first time, using aerosol cans..

worst case, i get it painted..i'm pretty happy with the bodywork..so i just saved myself $650

    EDIT: ~~~~UPDATE!!~~~

    how's that for aerosol cans?

well, if you really look at it, it's not completely perfect with all the original contours of the car, and right now it's noticably duller than the rest of the car, but after some more polishing it should look pretty nice! all for like $30..

Mad Props to ya, it takes a lot of balls to try that stuff, and you sir on the budget you stated did a great job. Ya there are some stress cracks in the paint on the bumper but it looks hella good. I should let you fix the side of my truck.

                    Re: Update on the damage

i haven't taken to the bumper yet, and those spider cracks were there from some idiot a while back. I'm deciding whether to just replace the bumper or try and fix the whole thing. It pretty miuch fully needs to be repainted and there is a hole in in on the left side that my bumper sticker is currently covering up. It's something i could fix, but with bodyfiller in a plastic panel, what would normally just spider crack the area would also crack the filler, so i might just get a new back bumper.

The paint i used i believe was called PROMAX. Just an aerosol can from carquest, nothing special. Primed it with i think krylon autobody primer and clear was actually engine clear coat since they were out of the promax clear. it was the only other enamel they had, and it's friendly so it worked fine.

OK...I'm trying to fix up my black bird...

What clear coat did you use? spray can I assume right?

How did you get the clear coat to go on and be glossy? What brand?

                          Re: Update on the damage

                          ^^^
before painting, get the surface as smooth as possible.. i sanded to 1000 grit before spraying on my base coats. I got a few good coats of enamel black gloss and then wetsanded down with 1000 grit to get it real smooth and free of all orange peel. after that i used what was actually engine enamel clear coat. The biggest thing is to make sure you are using paint that is friendly with the base coat. i tried it with a lacquer base coat and it lifted and looked like sh!t.

For the clear, i pretty much put it on as thick as possible without running..but it did anyway, but i wasn't concerned about that because i could colorsand that out. So i sanded with 1000 grit between each coat of clear and i think there are 3 coats. after it was done, i colorsanded 1000, 1500, 2000, and 2500, then rubbing compound with a random orbital buffer (x3 or so), polishing compound (x2 or so), scratch remover, swirl remover, nu finish polish, and finally mothers cleaner wax. It really looked like crap until the swirl remover. that was meguiars and that is what REALLY works after the wetsanding. To be honest, this paint looks better than any other part of the car because it is just perfect. and imagine...aerosol cans..:)

haha, i'm not sure i'd go do a hole car with rattle cans, but i'm sure it could turn out if the time was put in to it. What really set this off was the colorsanding and swirl remover. If i had a whole ton of time, and this wasn't my daily driver, i might even consider repainting the whole car like this haha
