  • Pitting on inside of chrome wheels?

I cannot for the life of me believe it's happening again. This is the 2nd set of brand new chrome wheels I've owned and the insides are looking like crap. I don't use any cleaners on the wheels whatsoever (just car soap and water) the car stays covered outside, and still my chrome Z06 motorsports are forming pit spots on the inside of each wheel that make them look like sh!t. It bothers me because these are 18" wheels that you can see right through and there are the spots. This car has not seen any snow/salt or anything else harmful. I'm thinking that acid rain might be causing this because it's only on the inside edges right where you can see it.

Any suggestions???? I'm going to work on one tomorrow and see if I can polish or buff them out. Otherwise, I'm going to have to sand and paint the insides of each wheel..

apparently all GM chrome wheels do that. i cant help you with what to do... but i can sympathize! mine were terrible. they made so much noise when i was driving slowly.

OMG. What do you mean they made noise? My father thinks it is calcium deposits from the hard water I am using to wash the car and the wheels. If that's the case I will try some watered down lime-away or something.. but I don't think that's going to do the trick. I think they just do a piss poor job at chroming the insides of these wheels. I'm still thinking sanding and painting might be the best option. I was thinking along the lines of caliper paint since it has ceramic in it. Either black or silver.

who really cares about the inside ? as long as u keep it clean its pretty damn hard to notice pitting on the inside.

my stock chrome wheels are crappy too. the inside starts to flake off and hits the caliper on every revolution making a clicking sound. I have to keep pulling it off.

Maybe you should maybe start using car wash Zip Wax, Armor All, etc. instead of soap. It might help the problem.

I use Blue Coral on the entire car.

When you have open 18" wheels, unfortunately, it's noticeable. :(

weird. my stock 97 RS chrome wheels have NO pitting and they were NOT taken care of until i bought it 3 years ago(and they were used as new england winter wheels too!)

but now its a wash and wax for them about oncea week

might just end up being a hit of miss with rims. it really sucks. instead of painting them a color, why not try to do a clear coat?

Yeah, that's a good idea, as long as I can get the spots out. Thanks everyone.

exactly. its pretty annoying. the guy at the shop where i take my car said that he had never seen it until he started working on newer gm cars.... and that he sees it a lot now.

when im driving slow, i can hear the clicking over my exhaust.

Sometimes... Usually, I wipe them dry after a good wash, and then I use a light spritz of glass cleaner (no ammonia) on them and buff them with a soft cloth. For a while I was even wiping the insides of them after each wash, but I got kinda lazy with that and now it's showing...

OK, so anyway, I have some info. POR 15 makes a clear paint-on laquer that protects and seals chrome. (For those of you who haven't had the misfortune of pitting yet). For those of us who have, POR 15 makes a "hardnose" paint that does not chip, crack, ect. It seals out any further corrosion and comes in various colors. It's hard as a rock and is a one time deal. Once it's on, it ain't coming off. It is a one step paint. I think this is what I will go with. Only thing is.. I'm not sure if I should just paint the insides black or go with a flat gray. Other colors are blue, red, and I think green and such. It cost around $33 a pint.
