    ok, ok...i know...Im an idiot...I just got a new spoiler repainted and I watched the guy detail a panel on my car by wetsanding it...i thought to myself holy **** that looks good...Im gunna try it on my hood when i get home...so I did, hoping to get the same glass shine effect...except i got the opposite and my paint is dull with a ton of marks on it...so let me tell you what I did exactly and hopefully someone can help me fix this problem ive created.

    1. I wet sanded with 2000 grit
    2. I used a black polish...that turtle wax stuff that comes with the chip stick
    3. I waited for it to haze and took it off
    4. I put on NUshine another polish...wait for it to dry wiped off the haze....did this all with a orbital buffer
    5. washed it down
    6. Applied mothers pure carnuba wax

    it looks like ***...like its bad...really dull and you can see different marks in there

    Now when i sanded it, I made sure not to have any orange peels...thought it would come out great and now this...can anyone help me out?

    It sounds like you need a professional to polish the car before you do any more damage.

    Idealy you would wetsand up to a high grit. Hit that with a harsh polish and an abrasive pad and work your way down polishes and pads until you have taken out all the maring. You can't just throw stuff at it and hope for the best.

    Also, polishes don't need to dry to a haze. You are working them against the surface then removing whatever is left. It won't matter how long it sits there.

      I would move up to 2500 grit and be sure to use a sanding block. Your hand creates uneven pressure that can cut parts of hte paint down more than you want. Hopefully you haven't cut through the clear coat, but it's possible because colorsanding factory finishes is a lot more tedious than new jobs. Once you have it perfectly smooth and dull after the 2500 your going to want to go over it with rubbing compound, polishing compound, scratch remover, swirl remover, polish, and wax. If you take your time it can look good, but be careful!

              it looks like the only thing i didnt really use was the cutting agents and swirl removers...im thinking maybe sand her down again 2morrow and pick up some of this stuff and try again...

              also...unless i really did some crazy overkill sanding...is it possible to go through the clear coat with 2000 grit?...seems like its pretty fine to me and would take a lot of work to do serious damage?

                most likely its just your polishing method that was wrong. take it to a professional and tell them exactly what you did. i would say theres a good chance that you'll be find once they buff/polish it out.

                Most likely its because you didnt polish it with a abrasive polish. You need something like a medium and then low cut rubbing compound followed by a good swirl remover. If you visit the ls1tech.com appearance section and do a search for wetsanding you'll find a lot of walkthroughs on how people have polished after wetsanding.

                once again though, for a sure bet, take it to a pro.

                  thanks...i think im gunna give it one last shot to try and fix it...and if that fails take it to a detailer...kind of wanted to avoid that tho...I will let u know the outcome tho..thanks again.

                    What kinda machine are you using to polish it? You're not hand rubbing it, are you? You'll be there forever, if so.

                    If you do decide to proceed with the wet sanding, put a little dish washing liquid in the water to help lube the surface.

                      DON'T SAND AGAIN. If you have one, use a high-speed rotary polisher to bring it up to a shine, then go at it with the orbital to get rid of the wheel marks from the high-speed. Wet sanding is not for the faint of heart or short of skill. I'm with the others, hope you didn't cut the clear coat...

                        Yea I didnt sand again...i went out and polished it 4 times with a polishing compound then I used the meguirs swirl remover and put some Nu shine on it...that brought back the shine and colour to it (or it looks that way right now, but then again its night time) but I still have like tiny scratches and white-ish marks on there. I have to see if I can get a pic tomorrow, but I think it will be hard because you can only see em from certain angles.
                        Im using a random orbital polisher- 8"
                        I still dont know how to tell if I've gone through the clear coat...

                          if you go thru the clear coat, there will probably be a white circle around the area that you've gone through the clear coat. Otherwise, while your sanding, and the water turns the color of your paint, you've gone thru the clear coat.

                            Well...that would explain the white stuff...and yes the water was slightly blackish in the pale (black car)...damn it this suxs. So what does this mean? can a detailer fix this or do I have to have the hood repainted?

                              once you burn through the clear if the paint is not damaged you can just scuff it and re clear it, however if it is damaged then just blend that spot and then spray clear.
