They should all be painted behind. I'm pretty sure some SS cars came without them.
What I did was warm it up a little bit with a hair dryer, pull off the trim, then it's just rubbing off the foamy adhesive backing. I used my thumb and other fingers to just roll it off, no need for adhesive remover or anything like that. Then just wash the area, go over it with some polish and it's done. Took me less than 2 hours.
