so i have a 98 maro and i read in the "how to" forum in the "how to f body sites" sticky and there is a mod you can do to fix our sluggish hatch releases. now because i have a 98 my release mecahnism doesnt have the stock spring on it, so i bought a used one from a 99 and installed it. (which was a PITA btw)

anywhoo i went to lowes and bought a 3/8 diameter 2.5" long spring like it said, and piggybacked it onto the old spring.

the result....nothing different than the stock spring. i even tightened up those rubbers spacers at the top of the hatch so there would be more room for ti to go down. i mean it pops up like pop! but doesnt "fly up" like i had pictured in my mind from the install. when you say "fly up" im thinking it goes from closed to all the way open.

but it just pops up like 2 inches higher than normal. any help anyone??

hmmm ive never heard of that... ill have to look into it, could be nice... but i also have a question about the hatch...yesterday, it kinda just stopped working... i can shut it, but it won't latch and lock, you can just kinda...open it. any ideas what it could be? sorry... not trying to thread jack...

That fix is not so the hatch lifts up, it's so it clears the lock.....the problem is when you push the button the hatch starts to open but as it's opening the lock closes again and doesn't let the hatch go up all the way...the result was having to push the hatch button twice to get it to open......the piggy back springs fixes that....thats all it does, if you want something to open your trunk from a closed position, look into linear actuators.

        LOL @ You!

You honestly thought putting that small spring on there would lift the heavy @ss hatch all the way open? :wtf:

        Seriously?

Nikon is right, its just so it will open past the lock mechanism

Even with those, you'd need multiple, probably 4 or more Id imagine to do the job.

^home depot or lowes...look for a 5/8" diameter 2.5" long spring; they come in packages of two

                    nope, not at all.....

it all depends on how fast you wanna go...I've got two of the fast ones lifting my boat hatch which I feel is heavier than the camaro hatch..........so no, one could do it, but only place to mount them is on the side, and unless you want the hatch to kink on the way up, you gotta use two.......regardless, way too much fabrication for the small trunk the camaros have.
