am i dumb for thinking this?

when i think of buying rims.. i think of getting chrome/polished rims so i can do different designs.. i could paint the middle black or gunmetal grey and when i get tired of that look i can clean the paint off and go back to the chrome look. basically i'd never buy black rims with the polished lip. i'd rather buy full chrome ones so i can experiment.

yea...no. You are going to need paint strippers, thinners laquer, etc. to get that paint off, completely mes up the chome. Plus i dont know that you can paint chrome without preping it.

Chrome is a b* to paint, and you will chip it when you strip the paint off.

Painting rims is not like painting walls, it's more than buying paint and slapping it on.

i've painted chrome and cleaned it off 2 months later. came off easy with laquer thinner. if they're polished aluminum then theres nothing that can get messed up right?

Polished aluminum is different than chrome. Sounds to me like yours where polished, not chrome. Chrome itself is a paint-like coating that's put on the rims. If you try to strip off the old paint, the chrome most likely will come with it. Now polished aluminum is simply that. Aluminum that has been sanded with very fine paper to give a polished look. Those would be paintable and then have the paint removed. Although, they may need a quick go-over before they look their best again.

Why would you do that? I think it would easier..and better for the chrome if you used chrome polish? I use chrome polish on mine and they look new.

its a tough job painting chrome. if you want to paint youre going to want polished aluminum. the problem though is that i would think you will need to scuff the aluminum a bit to paint them and when you switch back, you're going to need to resand and polish. its a lot more work than you may think.
