First - I did not disable the airbags. The entire system was D.O.A. when I bought this car.
Well, I installed a 1987 Trans Am steering wheel into my 1993 Firebird today. It came out fine and looks very nice. The best part, I bought it for $5 on ebay. I will post some pics when I get a chance.
i wouldnt have thought you could put an 3rd gen wheel into a 4th gen. looks good
It did not fit without some persuasion. At first the plastic hub collar hit the steering column. So I trimmed it down about 1/8 of an inch. Then the hub was rubbing on the airbag clock spring. So I removed that. After that it fit just fine.
No, it is not legal. My only point was that I would not disable working air bags for the sake of a better looking steering wheel. That point has been discussed many times on this board.
I just wanted to make the point that I did not disable a safety device, it was broken for a long time already.

Yes, in most states you would need to fix it. However, in Florida we do not have State vehicle inspections. I am keeping the wheel in case they ever impose inspections. Then I will just put it back on as a dummy wheel. When I lived in NY they were very tough on vehicle inspections.
This is why I like FL so much.
Loud exhaust, no cat, old school steering wheel - no problem.
