  • !molding question

I've been seriously considering taking off the molding. My driver side is all faded and looks crappy. My car is 13 years old, will the paint under the molding look any different since it won't fade as fast? Anyone see this after doing the mod?

My pass side was repainted a few years back. He painted the molding too (with it on the car), so will it be impossible to pull off that molding w/o damaging the paint?

    Thanks.

f-. That's what I thought. He said he was doing me a favor by painting the molding (and that side does look a lot better), but now I'm stuck with the sh!tty looking one on the driver's side.

As you probably already know, but the only real option you have is to repaint the other door

On my list is to get a new hood some day. I'll have the door painted then.

          Thanks for the input.

Back when I got in my first accident, I ended up having to get my passenger door repainted. They repainted all the molding and everything. About 2 weeks after I got it back I took the molding off. Looks fine, you can't even tell it was on there.

Try removing the small pieces that are just on the fender and the rear quarter. If it looks fine under those, then I would say you should be fine to proceed with taking off the rest. If it doesn't look okay to you, then just slap some 3m adhesive tape on it and put it back on the car.

It didn't leave an edge between the old paint and the new?

Surprisingly no.. Was kind of shocking as that's what I was expecting to happen. I didn't get a chance to remove them before it got taken in for repaint, otherwise I would have taken them off then. Guess I kind of lucked out.

Come down to GA for the weekend. We can grab some brews and do a little painting.

Interesting. Maybe when I find some time, I'll pull off a small piece.

I'd say if it goes as well as it did for blindxeyed, go ahead and try a small piece and see what happens. If it leaves any of the sticky residue behind, a clay bar should take that off. Good luck!

yeah, SF, i did this on my 93 so its as old as yours just about.... they came off pretty easily with some fishing line and the hard part is rubbing off all the left over tape, but if you have a buffer or something of that nature i think you can rub out any little lines that it leaves behind. The paint behind it looked fine, it's just the tape left a little outline, but like i said you could probably buff that out very easily.

I like the fishing line idea. Very smart.

I have just about every product meguiars makes, so I get can the residue and little lines out. Interesting that it doesn't fade differently. My biggest concern right now is on the side that was painted. Will have to try in a few weeks. oh, and buy some fishing line. ;)
