1.0-1.4 isnt rec. for primer. its a small tip. he would have to THIN out th at primer hardcore.

most kits come with a 1.7 tip

look on ebay. buddy of mine got a whole HVLP kit for like $80 shipped. came with a touch up gun 1.0 base and clear gun 1.4 and a primer gun 1.7 not a bad kit, but Im a sata fan.. but sata's are not cheap... but I got mine from a swap meet. so I got it for $200.. lol its a $700 gun. but I make an extra living off of it too... so I have to use good guns.. they all work the same, just this gun is easy to work with and parts are avalible.

Thank you. You are correct. After posting this, I looked at my gun and 1.4 is my SATA 90 clear HVLP (although I did once shoot primer with this gun). My primer gun is larger. Sorry, I haven't painted in 4 years. :(

A good filling primer is thick and fills in all the little imperfections (scratches from the prep sanding) on the car. Think of it like liquid Bondo. You want to spray a fairly heavy amount on the car. They you block sand it down with 600 grit, spraying more primer as needed, until the body is perfect. You can then spray a sealer if you like. It's like a tinter intermediate primer between the filling primer and the top coat. I've sprayed with and without it. I usually use a sealer when I'm painting over a factory paint job and not re-priming from bare metal. Sometimes when you sand though the clear coat, new paint will make the old paint bubble up. A sealer can help prevent that.

I've have good results with Valspar stuff, but I'm not sure what else is out there. I'm only a casual painter.

I would do the final sand by hand. Make sure you use a sanding block, as sanding with the palm of your hand can cause low spots due to uneven pressure. Dry sand the old paint (you can use a machine for this), prime, then wet sand the primer.

If you have any other questions or run into any problems, just let us know.

before painting, you should dry sand, not wet sand.

after painting base coat, you can wetsand it with 600 or higher grit before you spray clear, but i wouldnt do it unless you have to like if there is some major runs or something in the paint etc... after spraying the clear, wetsand with 1000 or higher. i used 1500 on the clear coat.

What's the paint like that's on it now? If it's not flaking and still in decent shape, you probably just need to flat it out really well (no shine remaining). You may need to work the bad areas more with the sanding and primer.

Go get some scotch brite pads and go nuts. It will scuff the surface so it the paint will adhere well.

you want to take off ALL of the clear.. as for the base on your car now, you'll have it scuffed enough when taking the clear off. I dont care what anyone says.. take as much clear off as you can. you dont know what type of paint they ahve used. Though using a sealer, normally the same brand as the paint and primer you have purchased, it may still have a chemical reaction.

PENDING on what type of base color you have you can or can not wet sand also known as color sanding.. here is a web site that has a TON of info... you'll like it, has TONS of information for prep, paint, clear, air brushing, bodywork...

check it out, its where I got some of my info from, other than that, I got my info from just doing it. your best bet is to get a fender from a junk yrd, and practicing on that till you get what you want. the biggest thing besides prep work is having the right size fan on your spray and distance. too much air can give you runs and orange peel, too little will give you a dust like effect and you'll end up ruining the paint and having to redo it. also make sure you clean your gun out AFTER every use. never mix paint. use paint thinner which you can get at any auto parts store to clean your parts.

anything else, feel free to ask.

http://www.custompaintforum.com/ This one is pretty good. and there are TONS of people there to help out.
