Took off my underhood insulation this weekend because...I felt like it. It was dirty and uhhh... insulating. Now that I took it off engine sounds quite a bit louder. Thats pretty nice, but I'm worried about something. On my moms old car (pt cruiser actually) it developed some sort of freak overheating of the power steering system and burned all the paint off this little spot in the hood. ewww.
Anyway If something like that happened with no insulation on, I can see it hitting the fan that much harder and faster, so I keep looking under there to make sure I don't see paint burn. Maybe I'm paranoid. I'm considering getting some bbq grill paint to put on the bottom of the hood, or at least the plastic parts to protect it a bit.

its a flat black anyway, does this sound retarded?

    hm?

    Re: Underhood

i wouldnt worry about it - i have an aftermarket fiberglass hood with no insulation and just some high temp engine paint. Been like that for several months now without any problems

      Re: Underhood

lots of folks on here have pulled that mess off...there's enough space between our hoods and engines, and adequate air flow under there to keep from scorching anything...

you should be fine, I think its there more for sound isolation...

It's supposed to be a fire-suppression device, in the sense if something caught on fire, it would melt and smother the flames. However, if something in your engine bay is on fire, I'd think you have bigger problems at hand than if you kept the liner or not.

Now that I think about it, some cars didn't even come with it.

Yep, under my hood is bare and it's fine. Had the car for almost 2 years now and no problems.
