Uh how does the shifter knob come off? I tried twisting it,and pulling it, without to much effort and it didn't seem to be moving much.

^yes. To expand a bit, put the car in 1st and use a small screw driver to gently pry the staple out toward the dash. after that's out, just pull up and it will pop off.

If it's a manual, I would look for the same staple in the front of the shifter. Put it in 2nd or 4th and look on the front. Check if there is a staple up there to be removed. I'm not sure how to do it on the manuals.

hmmm well I didn't see one. It kind of looks like it should somehow seperate into two pieces, but I can't get anything in there to pry. Any damage if I just pull real hard?

I doubt it's just stuck on there. I'd say more than likely it's screwed on.

a friend took mine and put it in his jeep, then sold his jeep and never gave the knob back
