  • Replacing Fog Lights and DRL's on Firebird

My car is getting close to 10 years old now. I barely drive the thing but when I reversed it out of the garage for a wash, right away I said to myself "wow those look old and ugly". That nice orange color wasn't coming out of the DRL's anymore, one had a crack in it and both just looked dull. I took them out and tried cleaning them, but it still didn't look right. So I decided to buy some new ones (If people are wondering, it's REALLY easy to access these lights if you pop up your headlights with the hood open. You DON'T have to jack up the car)

So I order one new DRL lens and housings from the dealership. (one was in ok condition still) In the end I ended up getting two. One for $69.99, the other for $15.00. Both brand new. I'll explain later down in the thread how I got the other one cheaper. Sometimes it pays to be stupid :P

Anyways. I'll replace the DRL housings with the new ones that won't be a problem, while I'm at it I'll buy two new amber bulbs as well. While I was at the dealership I asked about the foglight assemblies also, each one was $134.00. So I decided against that until I can see if I can clean them like I attempted on the DRL's.

My question is (I'll find out in a couple of days when I have time to look) are the fog lights one assembly? Or are they like the DRL's? Where you just pop the bulb out. Even with that little opening where the light goes in the housing I can still clean the inside of the lens really well and get it looking new again. The fog lights have no cracks or anything in them. The lights I'm talking about are on the outside of the car in the following picture:

Another question (I tried searching, but I couldn't find anything specific) Can I change those bulbs out for say sylvania silverstar bulbs? I'll post pics of the before and after. I know it's just general maintenance but I think it will really make a nice difference.

How I got the other one cheaper. So my brain wasn't working when I picked up this part. It had to be shipped from the states. So I told the guy, sorry this is the wrong one, I need a orange one. So he agree's, "yeah thats right its a turn signal, it has to be orange". So he orders in another one and it comes in. It's the same one. So I come in, and tell him it's the right part, I just need an amber bulb. So I tell him I'll just take one. He looks at me and says "I really don't want this one sitting here I'll give it to you for 15 bucks" So my stupidity paid off :D

Very easy to remove and replace.

Both are bolted by self-setting nuts. They have teeth that, as you tighten them, they carve in. Three nuts for each assembly.

The easiest way is to go through the pass through under the car, right before the front wheels. I believe there are three bolts/screws and the door drops down.

    Easy job...just teadious.

I run Silverstars on the Fogs...great combo. Clean and white...do it.

I've thinking about doing that as well. My DRLs are showing their age. Condensation and cracks are on them. I'll buy new ones from the dealer eventually. As for the fog lights I've been looking at halos. Whaddya you guys think of these? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...m=270117347045

It is not very hard to do. The fog lights come with new bulbs. Buy from www.gmpartsdirect.com , imho. Christopherrr is right - easy but tedious.

I solemnly swear I am up to no good.

Holy crap!! Those DRLs are supposed to look like that?! Mine have always been that orangish color when they were off. Seeing that makes me want to get new ones now.

It happens gradually over several years. I was very glad to have the all-new ones in place.

Re: Replacing Fog Lights and DRL's on Firebird

So I changed out my DRL so far, haven't had a chance to clean up the fog light lenses. Thanks for the tip on the door Christopher, it worked out perfect.

Here's the difference between old and new:

              Old on:

              New on:

Front Shot (The picture doesn't do the justice, they are BRIGHT orange, the front end just looks much better now. Don't mind my missing w68 piece, lol. Ran into a cone on the highway one day, I do have a new one, just haven't painted it yet. )

I'll post up the fog lights when I'm done with cleaning the lenses and changing the bulbs.
