painting stock wheels

so i kinda dont want to spend the money on rims RIGHT NOW so im thinking maybe i can just get my factory wheels painted black, i mean i do like the style and i think it would look decent but what kinda paint should be used?

I used all enamel paints, sandable primer, high gloss black, and engine clear. I used the engine clear coat as it seems to be a bit more durable than standard paints.

I've also recently heard the idea of using a barbecue paint for the base, because it is supposedly more durable, however I don't have any evidence to back that up, so take it for what it's worth.

barbacue paint is a good idea.
wouldn't have thought of that. Think I might use it on the bottom of my hood so it doesn't oxidize prematurely

after step six how long did you wait before applying the second coat?

ok so im going through with this tonight , any last min tips? o and when should i use the engine coat? or is that just a personal preference?

I waited about 15-20 minutes between base coats.


I used engine clear coat because it seems to be more durable. I would say clear coat is optional, but it is really going to help the shine and longevity of the paint on the wheels, so I would definitely recommend it. But yes, engine clear over normal enamel clear is a personal preference.

I actually never got around to colorsanding my wheels. I wax them every once in a while, which really helps the shine and I think they still look great, so I'm not going to be color sanding them.

ok so i painted the wheels and they look great i used black metallic paint with a metallic clear coat, i let them dry over night now my question is now that they are dry should i wet sand with the thousand grit or am i ok? cause they arent that shiny and its a little rough to the touch.

What do you mean rough to the touch? How long did you wait between base and clear coats?

idk its just rough feeling for some reason, i waited between 10-15 min between each coat
