  • Shaved my antenna..

    And got a new one..

I was on the fence whether or not I liked it, but it's growing on me.

    What do you think?

I like it, makes your car look like a shark sort of.

How well does that get reception?

Reception is easily 10x better than my shorty. It's a powered antenna, so it's much better. Also had satellite radio through it for a day; Sirius. I hated it, and canceled the subscription (for a full refund, thank God), but the antenna did well with reception.

^^ that's how I felt when i finished the install, but it's growing on me, and I'm starting to think the shape compliments the car.

I think the shorty has more of a muscle look, whereas this is more sleek.

I'm still unsure which I like more, but I do like this one.

you should give XM a try, ive found it way better than the lil doggie company. it looks good, i had thought of getting one of those for my maro, but ive just decided to have my antenna (its a shorty right now) shaved when i have her repainted. dont need one since i only listen to XM now a days

                  Re: Shaved my antenna..

The main thing that got me with Sirius was the sound quality. It sounded..well, like radio. Way too much bass and an overall muddy sound. My system is perfectly eq'd over 16 bands to sound great with CDs, and when i switch to radio, it sounds terrible and I just can't listen to it. I suppose I could use another custom eq to the radio, but the quality just wasn't there with Sirius. Is XM any different in that way?

                            Re: Shaved my antenna..

I just searched "functional fin antenna" on eBay. it gets a lot of results, I went with this one:

                            http://cgi.ebay.com/Functional-AM-FM...QQcmdZViewItem

Note that I also tied the am/fm antenna in to the stock wiring for the antenna, the one it comes with is like 4 ft long, and it might be worth the extra 5 bucks to get the extension with power lead. I just happened to have some wire lying around for power and splicing the antenna wires.

Then you just drill a hole through the panel and metal below, and run the wires. I had to modify the nut because the roof was too thick to thread, it comes in two parts, I just took them apart and used the nut alone.

The antenna hole, I just fiberglassed it from the inside, and smoothed it out with a bit of filler. I need to pick up some more Meguiars fine cut remover and I'll color sand it tomorrow (when the store is open)

hahahaha as opposed to "non-functional"? those non functional antennas sure are useful. That would be the ultimate rice mod: an antenna that doesn't work.
