i like the look of the black Berger but i would want one in satin black not flat or gloss. (i want it to look like i wanted it to be there, not like i just cant afford paint that matches)

keeping in mind that i will always look for a alternative method before i pay full price for anytihng....
my idea is to go to a junk yard find a 4th gen camaro that's already black and has a berger with little to no damage. ill buy that one and use a **** load of rubbing compound to take some of the shine off to give it a the satin/semi-gloss look.
then put it on my car, and not have to worry about finding time that i can take my car apart. and still have a red berger if i dont like the new one.

am i a genius or an idiot??

      ok
1.buy a black berger for cheap.
      2. apply rubbing compound to take away shine.
      3. swap onto car.

      reasons,
      1. have 2 bergers.
      2. dont have to pay someone to paint it.
      3. dont have to paint it myself.
      4. easy.

it'd work. id probally just sand the black one and paint it satin, but thats just me.

ive seen people get black ones off wrecked cars and swap them on, easyer than painting it.

well I think your going in the right direction, but wouldnt it be easier to find one thats already black on the camaro, or really just spray it. and rubbing compound wont work to dull out the finish. your better off painting it, or buying one already black.

              want a pro look, cheap.

go to body shop, purchase the red scuff pad. scuff the berger, go to autozone get satin black and spray it. from side to side with a 50% overlap. light coats, then wet coats.. no one would never know it was a rattle job..
Lets see some pics when your done.

maybe some like 1000 grit sand paper and then the compound?
you said protected? as long is i dont take off all the factory clear wont it still be protected?

and yeah i was thinking if i totally screw it up then ill try my hand at painting it. if i screw that up ill either give up or pay someone to do it for me.
thats why i want to do this on an extra berger.

^ That I like. I was thinking of doing the same. there is a guy around the bellevue area in here ohio that has his snowflakes spray painted all black and it looks GAY.. I like the silver lip much much better.

                      Re: berger idea

I got mine off ebay for $35. Came in and it was nearly flawless. Just had a tiny chip on the far left corner of the panel. Check a couple of salvage yards on there first, because the local ones around here wanted $80 for one.

Painting it's not too bad. If done properly and meticulously, it can take a couple days, but there have also been people who just sand it down a bit and spray it. Just depends on what kind of time and materials you have. Personally, I'd say just go down to Autozone and get some sandpaper, some primer and satin black paint, and spray the panel (once you get it). Either do it yourself or have someone else do it, it's not too hard. When it comes to appearance, you get what you put into it.

And just for reference, here's how my satin black panel turned out.

                        Re: berger idea

Rubbing compound isn't going to may your berger turn satin black. It will just be FULL of deep swirl marks, which, in the right light, will look less glossy than stock. But in direct sunlight, it will look like really bad paint.

There really is a difference between satin paint and gloss paint that was scratched up to match it.

So you have a black Camaro, but you want a berger panel that is satin black? I don't get why....Unless I got this totally screwed around.

agreed,if anything it'd be a dull black, white light scratches in it. if you use anough rubbing compound to take away the gloss, your going to have swirls/scratches. theres no way around it.

i wouldnt even try wet sanding some of it away, you'd just end up with flat or semi-gloss at best. it'd look sun-fadded or something.

painting isnt that hard and you'd only need to spend maybe $10 on paint.
