How can I stop this from getting worse? Also, will I have to have the whole bumper repainted to fix this?

    Thanks!

Honestly, I would have the bumper re-done with quality clear coat, perhaps something more flexible?

Sounds like it's acting like silver used to. A lot of factory painters I know used to hate to paint new cars silver because of what they call "paint delamination". The clear peeling because the surface got too hot for the clear to adhere. Maybe take 2000 grit wet sand and then polish the spot out with maquire's machine glaze for now? Not too sure.

That's nothing. Mines peeling on the front and rear bumper, drivers door, hood, drivers side quarter panel, and both fenders. It's the whole reason I'm repainting my car and doing a front end conversion while I'm at it. Mines Dk. yellow green metallic though.

Yeah I guess I'll just have to get it repainted. I hope the rest of my car doesn't do that! The color is Monterrey Maroon Metallic. I wonder if warranty would cover that? I know it covers rust through. I've got 98,000 miles on it.

                  Re: clear coat peeling

It has to be professionally re-cleared. They will probably sand it out and spray clear on the entire panel. Or... they may repaint and clear the entire bumper..

you might be able to sand the paint with some higher grit paper along the edges of the wear and then shoot the area with some rattle can clear until the repair can take place. it most likely will still look pretty crappy unfortunately.

                      Re: clear coat peeling

I hear a lot of stories from people about paint peeling and fading one to many times. For those of you that the damage is already irreversible to late you screwed up get a new paint job lol. But for those of you that want to keep this from happening here is my two cents. First off when your washing your car never ever use dish-washing soap. It is way to concentrated and won't take to many washes before your car starts loosing its shine. Second always dry your car with towels. Don't wash it and then let it dry in the sun. This to will eat up your paint and I can't emphasize it enough. If your using dish washing soap and letting it dry up by itself your doubling the chances of your paint job looking crappy. And come on don't be cheap a top of the line car wash soap with carnauba wax is about 6 dollars a bottle and will be good for up to 15-20 washes. Second if your paint is already losing its gloss. Get some good car soap dry it properly and then buy and apply some carnauba wax also about 6 bucks and give your car about 3 waxes in a period of 2 months and it will already look better. I've seen it do wonders on old paint jobs. My uncle has a 1991 Firebird with original paint has always used the proper soap always dried it properly and waxed it regularly and his paint job looks better than on some 04 GTO's that I've seen like I said you want your paint job to last your going to have to maintain it.

                          Re: clear coat peeling

thanks for the info everybody. I have never used dish soap on it. However, i have used laundry powder a time or two. Also I have let it dry in the sun. I don't have a garage so I have to leave the car outside. I'm gonna wash and wax it tomorrow.

Yeah I agree 100% firebirdkid there is really so much more to paint care than that. There is almost as much to paint care as there is to any other aspect of your vehicle. But I addressed these problems because to me they are the most common made mistakes and the ones that can have the biggest impacts.
