  • how to replace gauges?

don't yell at me, i did a search for swapping gauges and how to remove the instrument cluster, but all i found was ppl asking how to make the v8 cluster work for their v6.

I just got a new white v6 overlay for my cluster i just need to know how to access the instrument panel.

    thanks..

there are 2 bolts believe 8mm. up top, take those 2 out, carefully pry off the cluster bezel (there are 2 clips on the bottom)

next there are 4 bolts I believe (same size) at all 4 corners of the cluster. take those out, pull cluster out. then you'll need a star bit (whatever its called) I cant remember how many of those there are. take those out to take the guage bezel out.

    Hope that helps

          Pre or post 97?

I've yet to find an 8mm bolt in my car, everything on the dash is 7 or 10.

not trying to shoot you down, just stating my findings. It could very well be different on the newer dash, which you described earlier.

no your right, I went out to my 01 and its still a 7mm. nothing wrong with being fixed, people get the right info...

so it all should be the same. but I dont know about the pre 97 dash... never messed with them.

                  Re: how to replace gauges?

Pre 97 sounds to be a bit more involved. It required removing the panel under the steering wheel, the dashpad, and the plastic piece that goes around the gauges, headlight and hvac controls, then going at it with the torx bits to get to replacing the gauges. Like I said, all 7 and 10mm with the exception of the torx. in this particular project I think it's actually just a philips and a 7mm socket and the torx.

                    Re: how to replace gauges?

well i finally got around to doing it but i can't find the right sized wrench/screwdriver.

it's the first two bolts on the top of the bezel that holds the guages in

i had a 3/8 socket wrench but it was too big. what size do i need like a 5/16th?

I'm not sure what its called I'm thinking socket wrench? lol

                    98 camaro btw

                      Re: how to replace gauges?

98% of the bolts on these cars are metric.

                      It's a 7mm, as stated before.

                        Re: how to replace gauges?

ok so I'm still working on the gauges thing butttt in the mean time I did this:

It took me like 30 minutes to get them in and adjust and all that.

I have a question about connecting the halos though

I know your suppose to hook them up to the parking lights( but is that turn signal light?)

Also I want the halo to blink when i put my signals on so I would connect the power wire of the halo into the signal light wire right?

Or should I just plug it up so it'll work? any pros/cons? advice please
                        thanks

Aren't those halos some kind of fluorescent/cathode type light? Or are they LED?

Yeah they aren't LED's I think there just regular fluorescent with the halo in the middle.

Well then I wouldn't think it optimal to have them running through the signal lights as signals. I would think it would put much unneeded wear on the halos and possibly cause them to burn out prematurely. I know that most of the wear on HIDs is turning on and off, that's why you don't see them in brights. Fluorescent has the same general idea as the HIDs, so I assume it would be a similar case.
