  • Little Bit of Engine Painting

Over this past weekend I did some painting in the engine bay. I did the Upper manifold, valve covers, coil mount and the thermostat housing. I took these peices off and painted them that way. It was a little difficult but overall not that bad and was a good learning experience. I have to say though, that passenger side engine lift bracket was a real PITA. Took me and a buddy like 3-4 hours to get it off. I took both bolts out by putting the car on jacks and getting it from the bottom. We had to connect 2 wrenches together for leverage to get the top one off. Needless to say I didnt put the bracket back on. I used the duplicolor paint, primer and clear coat. I have never really done alot of painting in the past so this was also something new for me. I cleaned and sanded the parts using the instructions on the paint can. I did 3 coats of primer and 3 coats of paint. The clear coat was a little tricky for me. I applied 2 light coats on the valve covers and then attempted a 3rd medium coat but it didnt work out so well. I ended up sraying too much and it ran down the side of the valve cover and dried a white looking color. So I painted over it with one coat of color and then sprayed a very light coat of clear coat. I did this on the remaining parts to try to avoid the running. All in all it turned out descent but I ended up getting a few chips during the reinstall. Anyway, Im done blabbing. It was fun and the engine looks alot better. I took a few pics.

    Intake before paint (Obviously)

Upper Intake Removed (Removed Rag from over intake for picture)

End Result Also replaced some wire looms

I also cleaned up the engine bay a bit. I had an appointment to get my new exhaust installed so I was running out of time and needed to get the car put back together. I didnt get to do everything I wanted to do as far as cleaning.

No, I wanted to do the Silencer delete but the writeup I read would only work on a 99+. So I read a post where someone said that 98 guys use a dryer hose. So that is what I did. Its just temporary until I get a Whisper lid. Does look a bit Ghetto but what the hell, it works!:o

Looks good, I'm still waiting to put on mine. They are spares, I P/P the heads and upper/lower intakes, the intakes are black and the heads/valve covers are silver color. One day I'll get them on, maybe I'll blow a head gasket , so I'll get a chance to do it.LOL Nice job on yours.

Thanks. How hard is it to take the alternator apart? Major PITA?

polishing would get the job done, and it would still look good

Wow! Thanks! You think it is that clean? I think it needs alot more work. I guess that is just because it is mine and there is always room for improvement. Anyway thanks for the compliment.

How would I go about doing that? Using the stainless steel wire wheel on the dremel tool? That is what I used to do the throttle body. It came out a little shiny but not that much. Not to mention that I went through like 6 of the wheels.

Just tape it up and paint it chrome high temp spray and spray clear on it, I wouldn't waste time trying to ploish it. Just tape it up real good and hit it with some paint. Less time and will still look good. Actually you could paint it blue too if you wanted.
