  • Can't get the transmission out!

As I try to pull it straight back (and tried lowering) the top of the bell housing hits the tunnel and the damned input shaft is still over the pressure plate fingers. Ive tried lifting up the tail as much as possible but still no avail.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Unbolt your exhaust from the headers/manifolds; if you can, and it will give you another inch or so.

Exhaust doesnt seem to be in the way at all. Its actually just the tunnel and the shaft. When I take it up at the tail it hits the tunnel too.

My engine trans assembly dropped down just enough to get the trans off when I disconnected the Y-pipe.

The tranny isnt hitting the exhaust at all. Im really not understanding how it will help me man the tranny... Is it possibly different for our cars?

Have you tried wiggling the trans up and down and pulling on it at it the same time, ususally worked for mine. Are you doing it by yourself on a rack or on the ground? Found it alot better to have a extra person why wiggling it have them push on it to break it loose. Good luck

Yep, gave it hell. And yeah it is actually two of us doing this.

              On the ground...

The tranny is completely loose. Its just that the bell housing hits the tunnel before the shaft is out past the fingers. I can move it in just about any direction...

Im begining to wonder if something isnt right on this car... This and the tranny mount has about 6 or more washers for it to contact the crossmember... wth happened there...

if u only need a small amount of clearance, then loosen the motor mounts a little bit, worked for me, put a jack near the back of the engine just for saftey

Are you removing the trans and bell housing together? Why not unbolt the trans from the bell housing, then remove the bell housing? Maybe I'm misunderstanding the situation....

because the slave cylinder is bolted onto the transmission and both of them ve to come off at the same time

i had the same problem, but it just was not completely straight and once i leveled the trans it came out

Straight? Angled the hell outta it and it came out. Pilot bearing finally came out in pieces.

Now the bad new is the my rear main looks fine... but the oil pan gasket doesn't... Any tips on that? LOL

Since the trans is out , it should be cake for the oil pan gasket, just remeber to unbolt the oil pickup on the passsenger sidehave to pry it open and get a socket on it then slide the pan back and it should come off. I cut the new oil pan gasket where the oil pickup goes on so it could be mounted straight up so no messing around with the oil pickup , which I replaced with a new one also might as well cheap price to pay, Meatyshells did the removal and install , I just modded the oil splash guard for the oil pickup and oil pan for -10an return line.

Re: Can't get the transmission out!

Well from my experience with my 98 bird if u got the trans that far away from the engine try and get ur arm and a wrench in there and disconnect the slave cyl there ar 2 bolts tht
                          Hold it n place
i got them out with a 10mm socket and small 1/4 in ratchet and bout 3 in extension
really jus depends on how small ur arms are cause there very much room to begin with after u get them off u can seperate the trans from bell housing

When you put the tranny back in loosen the motor mounts like the previous post stated and then jack up the front of the motor which will angle the back down away from the tranny tunnel. Works every time! I use to be able to swap a T5 in my 98 firebird in 1.5 Hours!! My WS6 takes about 2 hrs to do!

Loosen the motor mounts?? Leave the y-pipe on?? You're doing it the hard way.

It's not that the exhaust is in the way, the problem is that the exhaust holds the engine level. When you remove it, it will allow the engine to tilt back. With the engine tilted back, the trans will slide right out without interference with the tunnel.

Trust me, you're going to have a hell of a time putting the trans back in unless you unbolt the y-pipe.
