ring pinion/possi install

I got a used possi unit not too long ago and just orederd 4.10 gears so they should be here soon. Im going to do the install myself and was wondering how many of you guys have dont this and if anyone has gotten away with reusing the bearings.

unless you really know what your doing its best to leave this job to a pro, 1 onethousandth of an inch is all the "play" you get. But get new bearings anyhow since its going to be torn apart.

X2, it even takes the pro mechanics a couple of times to set it up right sometimes on how many shims to put in to .008", but yes if you do the gears might as well do the bearings and check the wheel bearings and seals. Also use good fluid like Royal purple and if you don't spring for a TA Cover , at least do the ARP main stud caps for $20 or so will make it stronger.

If the bearings are in good shape, they can be reused, although it's best to replace them; especially the pinion bearings. Pinion preload is different for used bearings vs new ones. With used bearings, you want about 15 in/lbs. For new bearings, I aim for about 26 in/lbs; do not exceed 30 in/lb.

Ive never done rearend work befor but im confident i can do it. I have a dial indicator to measure backlash and reading a wear pattern isent to hard, just gotta take your time and do it untill its right. How much would main stud caps actually help? I have some slicks im wanting to use so a little stonger would be nice.

You will need a pinion depth tool. Not just the dial indicator.

most people just reause the original shims and come out pretty good i think but after cheaking back lash with the dial indicator a little paint on the gears should tell me if there set up right. what do i need the pinion depth tool for?

Reusing the orignal pinion shim seldom gets the pinion depth correct. If you don't mind your gears making noise, then you don't need one.
