  • POSI/LSD Aditive?

I just bought a rear axle assembly from a 2000 Z28 to replace the one in my 96 camaro. I wanted to replace the oil with royal purple but I'm not sure which additive to use. Can someone shed some light on the matter please?

    Thanks.

stick with the stuff that is in your gm manual...I looked into this when I did my rear end a second time after last years incident, and all the manufactures I believe void any warranties if you use the synthetic oils...can't remember off the top of my head why

Royal Purple already has additive in it, read their instructions and labels on it. But when I put my TA cover on, and put fresh RP in it, I forgot and still used like 2oz of additive , doesn't hurt anything. The GM mechanic that does rearends all the time uses it in all the rearend builds he does and he said he doesn't use the additive since RP already has it in it. Mine ran quiet and smooth for about 5000 miles with my Torsen diff and 3.73's, then I installed my TA cover and ARP bolts. Heres some info:

I dunno, all I remember reading when I bought my eaton was don't use a synthetic oil, it was going to void eatons warranty...

Auburn's should not be used with synthetics as well.

Steve you have a torsen right? maybe it is different for the torsens because it is a worm gear type design?...Auburns and Eatons are the clutch type and something tells me there was some issue with the clutches and thats why they advise against useing synthetics...

              Re: POSI/LSD Aditive?

When I bought a mower 12bolt for my 69 camaro, the easton posi in it recommended regular nonsynthetic gear oil. However, I use Amsoil which is a synthetic and already has the posi additive. Amsoil has a guarantee that if you rear is damage due to oil, they will cover the repair.

I think when synthetic gear oils first came out, eaton had a lot of problems with them and won't recommend the synthetic. I don't they've tested the newer stuff from amsoil or RP, but I'm had no problems using amsoil in my 96 camaro posi or my moser 12bolt.

I know the GM mechanic swears by Royal Purple, puts it into all the rears he builds, he actually brought the gear oil from his house to put in mine since he knew he was working on it that day.

So if I use RP, I don't have to use an additive, but if I do, it will not harm anything.
Another strange thing (to me) that I discovered yesterday while looking at a Haynes repair manual, was that I'm to use auto trans fluid in my manual gear box. It this right or a printing error?

Thanks for the replies folks, much appreciated.
