  • Wild goose chase just cost me my transmission.

The guy at the shop swore up and down I had a leak in the intake manifold gasket. Got neck deep in the engine, replaced the gasket. Had to take off the throttle body and the throttle assembly. Turns out it wasn't the gasket, but those two stupid plastic hoses, one of which had a hole in it. The guy never bothered to check them.

In any case, I incorrectly reassembled the throttle plate and spring. I started the car, and at first it seemed fine. I let up off the brake to ease out of the driveway, then about halfway to the street I tapped the gas pedal. It floored. I hit the brakes again before I flew out the driveway, but was then stuck in the middle of the street with a car that I couldn't start without redlining.

Here's where I got really stupid.

In the interest of trying to drive the car back into the driveway, I pulled the gas pedal back with my foot and started the car. It revved up to about 3500 RPMs. Without thinking I put the car in drive with my foot still on the brake. The car practically jumped off the ground from the resulting SLAM.

Long story short, I correctly reassembled the throttle assembly, took her for a test drive, and now the car won't shift out of first gear, and putting it into drive feels like I just got rear-ended.

Is it safe to say my transmission is shot?

    Maybe the rear end too

I would jack up the rear end and take your differential cover off first. I've seen some people really mash on their transmissions without them breaking. But don't get your hopes up too high, that 3500rpm+ brake stand you did on a just started/cold transmission probably toasted some clutch pads and your valves inside.

my guess is the rear end, transmissions usually stand up to a lot, the 10 bolt is the weak part of the drivetrains

The rear end would keep it from shifting out of first?

Is replacing the rear end as prohibitively expensive as a transmission?

Please forgive my ignorance. I know a little about engines, and absolutely zilch about transmissions & drivetrain.

Hypothetically, and this is me thinking... it could if there was enough friction and binding to create engine load high enough to prevent it from shifting.

That SMACK your feeling, is probably the distance the gears are from each other being way too great, and allowing the gears to slap each other. But I would guess that it would do that coasting-accelerating all the time. Like a worn U-Joint.

(Post contains literally ZERO first hand experience, just a 19 year old mechanics imagination.)

Well, I'm going to take it to Cottman's tomorrow, and see if they'll diagnose it.

              Thanks for your help, fellas.

without actually driving the car, its a bit difficult to tell what it may be

whenever i have seen things like that happen (transmission placed in drive at high rpm) i have never seen the trans itself fail, but rear ends/driveshafts usually are the parts that fail.

I have also seen the tailshaft of a trans snapped off, but thats with a 450+hp car at the drag strip on a stock 4l60

i highly dought its your transmission ive put my tranny through more hell than u can amagine the 4l60e are tough trannys but however your rearend has nothing to do with shifting out of first and wouldent jerk you around when u put it in drive im sorry to say this but it sounds like its tranny time go to advance auto parts i just checked the price on one from thier salvage yard and it was $375 to the store with a 1 year warrenty
