diff fluid capacity

hey, i did a search, but couldnt find anything.

what is the capacity of diff fluid on our cars? or at least a round figure, i have two bottles that are partially filled, and im not sure if i should get some fluid or not

I usually have 3 qts on hand. Usually takes just slightly more than 2.

Thats about right, because of the TA cover it holds alittle more than 2 qts, when I put it in.

thanks, IIRC my haynes manual doesnt say how much to put in.. kinda made me a bit mad, all 4th gen f bodies have the same diff (basically) and they dont list how much fluid it takes, but they list every other capacity that has to be broken down 4 times because of the different engines/transmissions :twak:

i think if you use under or over 2qts depends of if you have to use additive. i use additive and almost 2qts.. without the additive i would use atleast both bottles

The additive is only like 2 oz. little bottle though.

If you need to use additive for the posi, put it in first. Then have two quarts of synthetic gear lube like Mobile1 70-90 weight . Add the lube until the lube comes out the fill, and then its full. There will be about 1/4 to half a quart left over.

From the 98 owners manual:

SAE 75W-90 Synthetic Gear Lubricant (GM Part No. 12378261) or equivalent meeting GM Specification 9986115. With a complete drain and refill add 4 ounces (1 18 ml) of Limited-Slip Differential Lubricant Additive (GM Part No. 1052358 or equivalent) where required. See “Rear Axle” in the Index

thanks, yeah, that is what i used before, mobil 70w90

i have two half full bottles, one is a newer style bottle, and the other seems to be a bit old, they both say gl5 on the back, but im not too sure if they are the same thing, and i dont want to be mixing different stuff in.

i only wanted to buy one bottles, but i may just buy 2 just to have some incase i may need it in the future
