Recently i've had a significant amount of rattling from what i think must be the clutch. It goes in an out of gear fine, and mostly rattles when engaging the gear and when in the 1500-2200 rpm range.
we need a bit more info, does it make the noise with the clutch pressed in also?
from reading your post, it would make me think that the clutch is not the problem since it does the same thing between 1500-2200rpm
its very possible it is the exhaust hitting the driveshaft tunnel brace, or the exhaust vibrating somewhere on your car, i would put money that it is the exhaust.
Its possible. When I ask people about this issue, they usually suggest that it's not in fact a clutch issue.
You mentioned the drivetrain making contact with the exhaust:
Regarding that, I've had for some time now a sort of knock when i break hard, shift into reverse etc as if there's something loose in the dirvetrain. It's a similar sound to when there's a loose engine mount. Is it a possibility that whatever's causing the knocking could be degenerating further and now even making contact with the exhaust?

that is your trans mount, its VERY common to break them, i went through 3 of them before i went and put an energy suspension mount on it
if i were you, i would get under the car and remove the driveshaft tunnel brace, it comes o with 4 bolts, and drive the car around to see if the noise goes away, if not, it is probably the downpipe separated inside, or a heatshield hitting somewhere
Thanks, that will help alot. What causes the trans mount to break? Its been progressively getting worse since i had the clutch redone 2 summers ago.
GM thought it would be a good idea to attach the torque arm to the tail shaft of the transmission. That way as the rear axle hops and jerks around it moves the trans with it. The rubber mount on mine is just about torn in half.

instead of using a normal mount gm put a hydraulic mount on the v6 cars, they are water filled i believe, and very soft for more comfort and a smoother ride, they break really easily because of the twisting of the drivetrain
can the transmission mount be easily replaced? how difficult is this job? what is required, aside from the mount itself, in order to do the replacement?

you can do it in about 15min
drive your car up on ramps, or put it on jackstands
find the transmission cross member, and take the bolt that connects to the mount off
jack up the transmission a tiny bit (1/2") and put a jackstand under it so its snug
take the 4 bolts holding the crossmember off
take the 2 bolts holding the mount to the trans off
