  • Rear end swap from 1999 v6 traction control to V8

I just found out my rear end barings are going bad. I talked to my tech and he advised just to change rear end out and save money. I have now 3.73 gear with traction control, I am thinking of installing stock 3.42 rear end w/traction control from Z28 1999 - 2002. Questions can I do swap with minor problem , if any ?

    - 3.73 gear
    - Jet DST Programer
    - Spark plugs (Split Fire) and wires (Taylor 8.5)
    - Headers (Pace) and Y- Pipe

    what bearings are bad?

it should be cheaper to replace something in the rear than to just get a whole different one

anyways, from what i know everything should be the same, except you will just not use the traction control stuff... reluctor wheel, and the sensor on the diff

i guess i was a bit confused by his post, if this is going from a traction control v8 to his car which is traction control, everything should be the same

Noticable noise coming from rear , so I took car to shop because of noise come from rear end.
They looked at the fluid from rear end and found metal shavings and fluid is dark and told me the bearings are going bad. The axle bearings that hold it to rear end. Job is about 1100 to change bearing.
I am looking around for other price do to new 3.73 posi gears that were installed. Gears are about one year old on car but wear and tear on bearings.

Thanks, I found out that theirs no diff just in gears, but having hard time letting go do to 3.73 posi that was installed one year ago.

I will keep looking around for price to fix bearings and look for another rear end. Tough pick 3.73 or 3.42?

My bad 1999 V6 rear end with traction control, to V8 rear end. Just found out theres no diff in size but gears.
Now thinking just to fix my 3.73 instead of replacing?:twak:

whoa, these people are trying to rip you off.. for one, there is no bearing that holds the axle in the rear end, and a small amount of metal shavings is normal in a rear end, especially if your axle bearings are going bad.

you can replace your axle bearings yourself in about 1.5 hours, and $70

your problem is most likely a pitted axle, i would find a used set on ebay or something for cheap.

im not sure what your experience is, or what tools you have, but i would rent a bearing puller/slide hammer from advance auto.. its $130, but well worth it.. i snapped my bearing puller trying to get the axle bearings out.

from what i have seen, the NAPA bearings (torrington.. which are the same as the stock gm ones) and the gm seals are the best way to go.

I paid around $20 for the seals from the chevy dealer, and $40 for the bearings at napa, and a few bottles of diff fluid, and a gasket.. i was a bit low on the price, but its a very easy job and not too expensive

If you want to swap it go ahead its not hard, any rear end from any camaro or firebird can be easily adapted(4th gen of course). But I got my entire rear overhauled for 300, its easier to just replace the bearings and such, and you should stay with the 3.73's instead of stepping down to the 3.42.

Not bad and I can change myself but I travel to much so no time. My friend is going to look at rear end because It was rebuild about two years ago. I getting a second opition on it because it drive fine no knocking but loud noise around 50-65 mph. Thanks for the info .

good to hear it. These rear ends seem to haave some trouble with the howling around 50-65. Just drive it and have fun, i wouldnt worry about it too much.
