  • rebuilding a 4L60/ 700R4

I'm picking up a corvette (1990) for dirt cheep but it needs some work. A good friend of mine has given up on it, long story short I know all the issues and the only thing I am a little perplexed on is how the heck I'm going to fix the 3-4 clutch packs. I found a place selling the packs alone for $80 but I think I'm going to go and get the full rebuild kit for about double the price.

First off has any one worked one the internals to a 700R4/4L60/4L60E?
If so what do I need to watch for and are there any special tool that I ABSOLUTELY have to have and cannot do this without?
Second Is there any one that knows of an online writeup on how to do a rebuild for a GM transmission? ( I'm looking but dont see anything worth noting)

Thanks in advance and sorry about bringing up a non F-body but I know its the same as the 4l60E in my firebird and none of the vette forums I can find have much useful info on the older auto's.

Yes, there are over $400 in special tools you need to do it right that only work with that family of transmissions. They are plastic and only cost a few dollars to make, but the guy rebuilding really gets screwed on them if he only plans to ever do one transmission. Get the ATSG manual for it or the HP book that also will have modifying it in it.

For the price of the tools you might as well take it to a shop with the parts and have them rebuild it, would be less than $400.

I've got a video (VHS) I can send you... It's shows step by step to do a full rebuild on the 700r4. I don't need it anymore.

        The parts you'll need are:
a spring compressor, I'll find mine and post a pic.
A tube that stretches the seals over the shaft.
        and snap-ring pliers

those are the only "specialty tools" I can think of, except you'll need some sort of clamp to align the two sides of the pump when you assemble it. I just made one out of two big hose clamps. and you'll need a "seal chaser" to guide the rubber seals into place, but I ended up using a pick for this

I'm not sure about your transmission, but on mine there was a modification that GM reccomended on the pump that had you enlarge the size of one of the holes from I think 1/4" to 7/16" but I can't remember exactly...

What I did, since that nylon seal tube was really expensive and basically worthless for anything other than this tranny, was do everything else, and then I took the shaft assembly to a trans shop and had them seat the seals for me...

Also make sure that you don't lose any check-balls from the valve body and that you make note of where they all go... Most gaskets that come with rebuild kits will have some sort of indicator showing where the check-balls go, but it's still a good idea to make note of it.

This is the spring compressor tool that you'll need, and don't even bother trying to do it without this, but good luck finding one for under $90...

let me know if you want that video. Its really a piece of cake if you follow the vid...
