  • Had trans filter changed and full flush

The Fbird now has 45K miles so it got a full flush and new filter at a local shop. They use Valvoline brand synthetic Dexron VI fluid (exceeds Dexron III for our trans). Checked on the net, and apparently Valvoline synthetic Dexron is a highly touted product. That was good to read.

Didn't expect to feel any difference but I was wrong. The shifts are very consistent now, where sometimes 1-2 would be harsh, especially under light throttle, and other shifts would vary in smoothness. Now they are always the same (depending on throttle). 1-2 is still firm, but smooth, and all shifts are smooth, nothing feels "grabby" or "sticky".

I know I went longer than the service manual says to go for a full flush, but things just got really busy this summer, and its not cheap. Ended up paying $130 for flush plus filter. And they didn't complain about the trans cooler, said they could get to the connection in the return line to open it up just fine.

Glad its done, and will do it again in about 30K or so.

I have been using Valvoline Dexron VI for 3 years now , only about 10-15,000 miles on it but still runs great with shifts even with the shift kit and Vette Servo. I plan on using RP this next time since I have it in all my other fluids and works great. I plan on changing mine at around 30,000 miles so I can install my B&M deep tranny pan also, that will add another 2-3 qts. Good to hear you like the Dexron VI , I thought I was the only one using it , although I suggest it when I can over Dexron III.

valvoline is good stuff.. my friends dealership did oil tests, and valvoline came out on top, so they went with them.

i need to change the trans fluid in my other car, for some reason the trans fluid keeps getting burnt.. this is the first auto car i have ever driven so i have no idea why it is doing this.

im thinking of either going with royal purple or valvoline.. i cant really decide. im just wondering if royal purple is as good as they say they are.

Like I said I have Valvoline Dexron VI right now for about 2 years still looks great and thats with a shift kit and Vette Servo, and HPtuners. It will chirp 2nd and 3rd eveytime I get on it which is about everytime I drive, which is about twice a week. But all the mechanics I have talked to, say RP is the best , thats why I bought the fluid and still waiting about another 20,000 miles so I can change it out and install my B&M deep tranny pan. I was going to install the pan but thought , I will be wasteing about $40 in fluid thats in there. With my HD tranny cooler it takes another 1/2 qt. and the B&M pan takes another 3qts. So alot of cooling there. I hope to have a built tranny and convetter when I swith it all out.

I wanted to install the deep pan too. But the bottom line is it makes more problems for me than it solves. The car barely clears the typical "pit" type oil change shops as it is, and the drop pan pretty much eliminates anything other than a regular lift. With the extra drop in the pan, the exposure to cracking or gouging chunks by rocks and debris while driving is just too great. If you only drive occasionally, and in nice weather, its a different story. For my daily driver, a steel pan is the way to go. BTW, my stock height and stock pan only clear the pit bays in two shops within a 20 minute drive.

Great to hear that the Valvoline has been working well for you. Good luck with RP.
