Open diff? Why wouldn't you upgrade to a limited slip if you're already doing all that work?

Because it's cheaper, And I'm not that rich :P But I'll probably go with the posi, unless it's just the gears, because then it won't work...

The posi has 29k miles on it, 200 shipped.
The open diff has 15-20k and is 100 + shipping, along with the exhaust, and an interior piece I have broken...

      I'm thinking posi yeah?

Def. go with the Posi rear , like said it would be a waste not to do it all at once. But if money is tight , then hold off and do it right later on.

It's not TOO tight. I just wanted to get my window tint soon, but that will wait I guess. I'd rather have a posi.

Mmm.... The guy with the posi is just gears. 3 series... No pumpkin. They wouldn't fit in my stock diff would they?? How much would it be for an empty 3 series pumpkin?

You need a 3 series diff and 3 series gears , pumpkin is the whole rearend what the diff. and gears go in.

Damn.... Screw that. I'll just go with the open diff. Stock replacement lol. I'm not drag racing, no burnouts. So I really don't NEED a posi. It's just nice to have... I'll get one when the deal is right.

So since I'm an idiot at this stuff... would this fit in the stock casing? It's a series 3, but the guy says it will fit. Just replace the stock parts.

Dude.. If you're still having trouble comprehending what a lsd, posi, open diff, "pumpkin", series 2-3 is and especially since you don't drag race, there is noooooooooo way I would recommend you attempting to do any of this. It would be pointless and a huge waste of money.

But if you insist on pursuing this endeavor please, please research this topic more and understand what you're getting into before you start spending money. Taylor has a nice set of instructions with pictures on how to swap out gears that you should probably take a look so you can actually see what you're getting into.

I'm not trying to come down on you, just inform you.

Just let the mechanic do what he needs to do, I'm sure he knows what hes doing.

I can definitely see where you're coming from. I will be doing drags soon enough, and I only need to get the parts and then I have a friend that's amechanic to do the install with me. Just gotta get to that point... sorry to be a pita, still learning all this

Well, that guy sold his anyways... I am now getting one off of an 01 SS. I thought Z28's and SS's had LSD's?

They should , I think most had torsen diffs and 3.42's , you'll have to check the codes on the car to make sure. Some had 2 series and 3.08's for gas mileage though. So make sure you check. Ebay they have GM Motive gears for like $150 then you just would need a install kit and the diff. I have a spare 3 series torsen diff with 3.42 gears but might be using them if I don't upgrade to a 9" and 3.50 gears.

Alright cool. I'm getting a open with 3.42's. But it's really cheap so I'll be looking into a posi or lsd someday.
