  • Ford 8.8 rear end swap

So I have pretty much finished gathering my parts for my rear end swap to a ford 8.8 rear end (minus those brake brackets!)

I'm just waiting on the guy to finish the rear housing itself...*should* be done by sunday of this coming week. So I'll snap some nice pictures and get em up for those interested.

You can probably get it done for cheaper than I got it done for (especially because parts are cheap in the USA)

Trakloc Posi w/4.10 gears $283 (I coulda got a posi with 3.73's for about $240 but I lost the f'n bid last second...I shoulda hit the buy it now for $15 more  )

Custom Moser 31 spline Axles with bearings/studs and C-clip delete $485 (apparently prices vary with cost of steel)

    used Calipers/hoses $50

    New rotors/pads $50/pair

rear housing with all necessary pieces/brackets welded on $1000

Grand total: $1868...I can probably part my rear for atleast $300-$400...so this makes the cost a little more swallowable, since it would bring the grand total to roughly $1468-1568

like I said, I'm sure if you shop around long enough you can get some of these parts for much cheaper...apparently you can get the axles for about 100$ cheaper from another company, but I didnt bother looking into it...the guy making my rear has all the specs lined up with moser, so I let him handle it...last thing I wanted was to order some custom one off axles through another company and have a wrong spec in there or something.

Dropped the rear end out today... was much easier than I thought, which was nice...my guy says the rears almost done. I now have everything and am right ready to go with the swap.

no need to break her in really...the trakloc and 4.10s are out of an explorer used :D

I already picked up my 3 quarts of Amsoil gear oil to...probably going to stop into Ford on monday and grab the posi additive...speaking of which, are all posi additives the same? I was thinking of going to Ford just to be on the safe side...

The amsoil could have the additive if it's synthetic...other then that I would go ford to be safe... though you would think they would be the same no matter the brand

So how are you going about getting the housing to bolt up? I cut the axle tubes off and
had some sleeves made for the 10 bolt tubes.

Still using a torque arm or going to the ladder bar set up?

I did grenade 2 of them...one with a zexel, my most recent was with the expensive eaton posi...destroyed the unit, clutches, and gears lol....only thing that was salavagable was the springs...

There is a guy in Toronto here that makes them actually...he's been doing it for 6-7 years with the fastest car running 9.71, and no breakages yet. The way he builds them is they bolt right up and can use our torque arms no problem. He told me swapping this rear in will be virtually the same as putting a stock unit back in, except its an 8.8 and wayyyyy stronger.

I pick it up Tuesday morning, so I'll get some pictures up, and let you know how it goes as far as install goes...install will probably be this coming weekend since I work afternoons this week...

Cool on the break in part, just take it easy to let everything mesh.

I just did synthetic in mine and they(GM) said there is no need to add posi friction modifier into synthetic.

I guess all 98+ V8 cars came with synthetic in the rear from the factory.

oh ya, for sure I'll take it easy for the first few days...I'm working out in Milton for the summer, so I'll be doing about 100km a day...few days and she'll be good to terrorize the town.

As far as the additive goes, my specs here from Amsoil say that I should be adding it still...well "friction modifier" which I'm pretty sure is the same thing.

Worst thing it hurts by adding it is the wallet...few bucks anyways...no biggie. I just hate going into the Sherway Ford Dealership without my camaro to antagonize them...I really do hate the people that work there...well, atleast the people that worked there 6-7 years ago when I was looking at buying a mustang :stp:...long story for a different day...
