My dad knows of a reputable shop that is willing to fix it for $1800-$2200. They said they'll put in an "upgrade kit" with all of the modern parts that are improvements over what was stock when the car was made.

My car is pretty much stock and I'm not into racing or anything, but is there anything I should request that they do while they're in there? Should I buy my own parts then have them install them and just pay for the labor?

I'm not a car expert like some of you, so any and all advice is welcome. Thanks so much :)
First, let me say that 1800-2000 for a stock rebuild with an "upgrade kit" consisting of "modern" parts seems a little high to me.

Second, a lot of the mods discussed in this thread won't be much of an advantage to a car that is stock and is not raced. All this talk of shift kits and Corvette servos is good stuff for modified cars but, for the most part, unnecessary with the type of rebuild you are looking for.

What I'd do is get prices from a few other transmission rebuilders.

You should just buy a low mileage 4L60E for $400 and just have it installed if staying the stock route, but have a shop check it out before installing, will save you money in the end. I picked up my A4 for $400 and had the transgo installed with Vette servo. Transgo and Servo was about $100 off ebay. It only had 10,000 miles on it but when they went through it they replaced some plastic parts with metal and beefed it upp some. Shift kits can make a trans last longer since there is less slipage on the clutches.
