  • aluminum drive shaft installed now and now i have viberation in driveline

ok before i installed my driveshaft everything was nice and smooth i could coast and not feel any viberations what so ever. now im scared to go above 50 cause it shakes so bad. im thinking the driveshaft may need to get reballenced what else could it be? and does any one know how much they usually cost to ballence? i do have a poly transmount on a umi torque arm relocation set to stock everything else on the car is stock.

Sounds like there was a weight thrown and now the driveshaft is out of balance.

      Maybe a bad U Joint.

Did you put new ones on before you installed it?

yes i did put in new ujoints before i put it in. i can't find a place on the drive shaft where it looks like there was a weight. im taking it off for now and going to see about having it balanced. does anyone know how much balancing a driveshaft should cost?

Shouldn't be that much to balance it.

did you install it properly...I heard there are a few ways to install a driveshaft but only 1 correct way. I believe there is a side of the U-joint that spins fast, and one that spins slow...you need to match it with the front end so that if the front is spinning fast the rear spins slow (I believe) otherwise they fight each other and you get a crazy vibration.

Happened to my buddies Chevy Avalanche...now this may just be for the truck D/S I'm not 100% sure...

Some DS's have weights, some don't. It really depends on how well it was manufactured. I think they're weighed individually from factory in a half-assed fashion. But I have seen some DS's that have a small metal "patch" on them, kinda like the type of weight used for a pricey set of wheels that have an adhesive backing on them, but I could be wrong. I think my 1 pc. steel has something similar on it, just a very small piece of metal towards the tranny end of it.

well took the drive shaft off today and found the problem. its bent and im unsure if i want to have it balanced and put on just knowing i have a bent shaft on my car would not make me happy. so its going to stay out of the car and maybe scrap it later. hopefully i can get 20 bucks out of it. ill eather wait and have one made or i know my older brother got a quote for a carbon fiber shaft for 300 may just go that route yah never know.

If its bent might as well throw it away, would be bad to sell it to someone.

Agreed. It's probably worth $3 as scrap metal, pretty worthless.

idk a scrapyard is buying aluminum for $4.00 a pound and the drive shaft is 5 pounds by its self. it will be close to $20.

If its clean aluminum(you get all the steel off it, might get a few bucks for it but not much)

LOL they aren't paying $4 a lbs, I think like $.40 a lbs I never paid much attention since I brought small amounts of aluminum, I think I got like $0.70 a lbs, for clean non-magnetic stainless. I brought pounds and pounds of that stuff, from work for good beer money.
