  • Posi vs limited slip?

I was looking through the Drivetrain section of the Modifications Encyclopedia and noticed this.

"It is worth noting that many people confuse the term "posi traction" and "limited slip differential". We will spare the technical discussion here but in a nutshell they are technically different though people often use the term interchangably. When fourth generation V6 F-Body owners say their car has "posi", what they really mean is it has a limited slip."

    So what's the difference?

Oh boy. Here we go again.

From my experience... "Posi" is the term used by old school types and rednecks (think Melba Toast or Joe Dirt). "Limited Slip" is the technical term more commonly used on the forums. Any other differences are going to be dependent on the person using them.

Ha ha I just watched Joe Dirt last night. "How does a posi track in a Plymouth work? It just does". Ok thanks I thought it was something id never heard of.

posi or positrac are both shortened versions of positraction which was GM's name for a limited slip differential LSD in the 50's

in short, posi is a brand name

posi-trac was for GM trucks I think, Jeep used Trac-lock, I think Pontiac's old name was safe-t-trac, all names for positive traction.
