Swapping the ring shouldn't be that much extra work as you were going to have to swap the pinion anyways. Double check to make sure what gear you have in your car. GU6 is the door code for 3.42 and GU5 is the code for 3.23.
96 White M5 Camaro. Manual everything. Magnaflow cat, dynomax dual outlet axle back. Swapped to a disc rear with 3.42s and a torsen differential, kyb gr2 rear shocks, moog rear endlinks.
So really I need to pull the gear ring off, and replace the pinion, with both of them from the replacement diff? And then the backlash is the part that'll get me.
Yeah, you need to use both the ring & pinion from the replacement diff. This is a cardinal rule of gear replacement - always use matched gears. Besides, if I'm not mistaken the 3.23 and 3.42 have different numbers of teeth on the pinion gear.
And yeah you figured it out, but no you don't need to pull the guts out of the old one, just replace the ring gear on the LSD carrier with the new one. That way you should also be able to get away with using the shims that came out of the original diff; you just may need to move some from one side to the other to get the backlash right.
Well while I was removing the ring, I realized that its completely screwed. It was being he'd together by loctite. I wouldn't put this thing near my car... good thing it was a scrapyard diff. Next step is getting new gears... just ring and pinion, and probably 3.73.

Yes, the 3.23 is 13 and the 3.42 is 12 on the pinion. The 3.23 has 42 on the ring and the 3.42 has 41. The big difference (though it doesn't look big) is the slight change in the curves of the gears to accommodate meshing with a different number of teeth. The pinion also gets smaller the higher the ratio you go. (ratios are about diameters - the ratio is really in the diameter difference at the mesh point - 41/12 is actually 3.50) EarlR is correct in that the gears are a matched set - never mix and match even with the same ratios. New sets seem to run about 200 from motive or richmond or hunt around on the v8 forums that are a bit more active as they swap and sell those frequently but the higher ratios are in higher demand.

What?? In the pictures, there are bolts holding the ring gear to the carrier. I don't mean to sound harsh, but what the hell are you talking about?
I interpreted it as the ring gear was glued with loctite in addition to being bolted on. Still I would think a little blunt force might break the loctite? If you're planning on buying replacement gears anyways might as well try to separate what you've got unless you're returning it.
I got it all apart. But the threads inside the ring were royally ****ed. Only half of em were there, a few of the bolts were hardly finger tight. There was a layer of loctite between the ring and the carrier. I meant to snap a pic, but I tossed the carrier. Kept the ring and pinion just in case.
I think when I do go ahead and gear the car, it might get done at a shop, just so I have someone to blame if it grenades, and they can tune for it. By then I'm hoping built motor, and the 3.73s will make it all good. Thanks for the input fellas.
Going from 3.23-3.42 is not really worth all the work. I went from 3.23-3.73 and loved it. When that rear end broke I went from 3.73-4.10's and really loved it. My car got the best gas miles from 4.10's as well..

I went with 3.73's and wish now I would of went 4.10's.
