I definitely don't want to reuse the TTY flywheel bolts. I've been searching all over for these things. Any Help? Sheesh, I've been working with these cars since 2000, and every year it seems harder and harder to find parts.

Re: Where can I find replacement manual 5spd flywheel bolts???
I just don't like that idea. Coming from a mechanical engineering degree, and having seen and done many case studies on mechanical failures from over stressed bolts, I'd like to play it safe. To each their own though, and I hope you don't ever come across any incident. I just emailed a rep at gmpartsdirect about part #24505092. I think that's the correct bolt but don't want to get stuck with the wrong ones without being able to return them. Thanks for your reply though and if it comes down to the worst case scenario, I'll look further into re-using them (if they don't break).96 Camaro M5. Re: Where can I find replacement manual 5spd flywheel bolts???
With a mech engineering degree then you should understand those bolts are under shear they're not really holding the pressure plate on. The actual flywheel is a machined part that fits the crank exactly with about .001 clearance. The factory bolts are 60ksi and there's 8 of them . Shear pressure to bolt failure would be 60000x8 psi. You would rip the teeth off of the gear long before the 8 bolts would fail in shear. The only reason GM uses a torque to yield bolt on the flywheel is to speed the assembly line same as they did on those goofy heater hoses on the water pump we all had to fix. Of all the transmissions I've ripped to shreds never had a bolt failure one and trust me there's been too many to count, got so bad I had to start making my own parts. Just something to think about. I know arp makes a set I'm sure they wouldn't fail under shear either.

No, you're right, and I agree with you fully on that. I just hadn't put too much thought into it. Damn long day  I still want to get new ones though, just in case one breaks getting them off. I can't really risk the downtime in case that happens.
and yea now that I think about it, every mech lab test and case study was mostly bolts and fasteners in tension.Last edited by Tyler; 03-26-2014, 10:49 PM.96 Camaro M5. Re: Where can I find replacement manual 5spd flywheel bolts???
Wow right on, I'm very impressed. Thought you might get a little bent with what I said but turns out you're a straight shooter. You do know what your talking about. Knowing the difference between shear and tension is a huge help through out life along with compression and pressure. Get them all figured out and you got the world of design whipped. Always keep this in mind though "the difference between a farmer and an engineer is an engineer can do almost anything a farmer can with half the weight and twice the cost". Lol

haha I like that quote. Hey, when someone is right, they're right. By the way, the rep got back to me and those are indeed the bolts for the manual flywheel.96 Camaro M5.
