This question is specifically for you guys with M5 and 3.23 gears. At what RPMs or speed do you make the 1-2 shift? I hate the bobbing of the car at this shift and especially going uphills. It just doesn't seem smooth unless I am really hammering it.

Also approximately how much do you press the clutch during this shift (1/3, 1/4 of the way)?

arrghhh maybe I just need to get rid of the stock shifter. This shift is the only one that has ever given me trouble, and the only one which I sometimes scratch (how embarassing )

Thanks

I usually shift around 4000 RPM if I want to go fast. If I do it just right then it is completely smooth and the car takes off. If it's all out speed I'll take it until 5000, but there is a jolt going 1-2.

Hope this helps!

I am a speed freak. So just about every shift I take it to 3,500 to 4,000. But to get a smooth shift it doesn't really matter what the RPM's are. It's how you press and release the cluth and when you press and release the gas. Slower releases of the clutch with slow increases is throttle should make for a smooth shift.

On bird and camaro clutch is diffrent, that's what I heard. On bird it disengages very early as you press on it, on camaro it's further down...
I usually shift at around 1500-2000 RPM 1-st to 2-nd... if I need to go fast, I keep 1-st til 5000-5500, then put the cluth all the way in, and go to 2-nd.

Also, in your manual there's a chart of recommended speeds for each gear.

This is kind of how I have been doing it. I guess I just have to keep the gas a little longer while shifting with less clutch. I don't have my car's manual though so I cant check the speeds.

Ummmm, what am I missing here? If your cruising, just driving around, push gas until 2000, release gas, fully push in clutch, shift into second, release clutch, give it gas. Is this that hard?
