  • Gear Question

I'm not sure what the 3.8 A4's come with from the factory normally, but mine came with 3.42's. I was just wondering if anyone could tell me what the equivalent in horsepower would be with the normal gears verses the 3.42s. Someone once said the difference between 3.42 and 4.10 is the equivalent of about 40 hp. I don't know if that helps you to better understand my question or not?

Are you asking about drivetrain loss? The higher the gear ratio, the less power you will actually dyno because of parasitic loss. You will accelerate faster, but you are actually seeing less power at the wheels.

I am not sure what the precentage is, but maybe this will clear things up enough so someone can explain.

The regular A4 w/o a Y87 package comes with the 3.08 gears, the Y87 adds the 3.42 and LSD. I was told that the difference between these two gears "feels" like about 20 hp. 3.42's to 4.10's is also a 2 gear ratio jump, I believe that may be the equivalent of 20 hp also, but dont quote me on that. I'm not an expert by any means on this, this is just the info I've picked up on over the last few months on the board. These are all SOTP gains due to the torque multiplication also, not real hp gains. Hope that helps, that was the answer I basically received when I asked a similar question a few months ago.
